View Full Version : Pal and NTSC question

I have a Pal Divx trying to make an NTSC SVCD, but my DVD player and TV are NTSC.

If I change the Resolution so that it is NTSC compat and with the right aspect ratio (I think), but I keep the FPS the same, will the movie still be ok?

Or will my dvd player not play it at all?

There are quite a few NTSC DVD players that will play PAL just fine. Try it first before you go nuts trying to convert.

If that doesn't work I am always downloading PAL videos and simply burning them in Nero's SVCD template as NTSC and they work both on my Pioneer and my Apex players without issue.

In the end what you have to do comes down to what your DVD player can play. There is no cut and fast rule as every DVD player is different. All I can suggest is start at the easiest point and keep working up the chain until it either works or gets too hard to bother as a full conversion from PAL to NTSC is a real pain.

So the simpliest way would be to convert to PAL SVCD and instead of burning the CUE/BIN file burn the MPG in Nero's SVCD and make sure NTSC is checked and not PAL.

Thanks

It's a Pioneer DV C505 if perchance you would know.

So I guess that means no chapters for me, but I don't mind. But one thing.

I guess since I have a NTSC tv, I use the NTSC resizing rules right?
say my file has a resolution of 528x302

I go

Height = ((720/528)*302)/(11/10)
Height = 374
Width = 480

Thus since NTSC tv, top and bottom border = (480 - 374) / 2
which equals 53?

This file doesn't conform to aspect ratio so I'm not going to take the final height x (4/3)

BeSweet also gives not scaled properly, whatever that means.
I s'pose I'll try your NTSC svcd method first and i'll get back to you on it

If you are going to burn with Nero and have no chapters, why not just use TMPGEnc's template. It'll convert it to the right framerate and you can fix the aspect ratio and letterbox/crop if needed with it.

TMPG only lets me use CBR

with VBR I can fit about an hour on a disc

There is a way to switch to VBR, under other settings, with the Video tab, switch Constant Bitrate (CBR) to 2-Pass VBR (VBR). It should work from there.

In your opinion

which works better?

The TMPG with 2 pass VBR
or DVD2SVCD with the 4 pass VBR?

Chunny

Oops can't use TMPG

My file doesn't conform to an aspect ratio

it's 528x302

would you say that's close enough to rate as a 16:9?

Argh I'm so confused with damn Aspect Ratios.

Leave the aspect ratio to 1:1 (VGA). To letter box, go to clip frame, choose the arrange setting button, then choose from the drop down, choose Full Screen (keep aspect ratio) or Center (custom size). I would choose Full Screen (keep aspect ratio), because the second option is if you want to make up for overscan. (The part you don't see on the sides.) Which could be difficult, since it's PAL resolution to NTSC. You might need a ratio calculator to fix that. So use the first option.

If I leave all that stuff like you said, keep the Aspect ratios

Then when I play back on TV will it be all stretched because I didn't letter box it.

LeonMcNichol

Doing what I said _WILL_ letter box it. Choosing "Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)", will keep the source aspect ratio and add boarders to the top and bottom. Leaving it just "Full Screen" would cause it to be streatched. They are two different settings.

Alright sorry sorry

I'm a little slow on things like this and it's running late.

and I assume since I select NTSC it'll already make it the right size

alright no more questions from me

I'll see if this works :)

EDIT:

I hope when it's on the analyzing screen, the little black bar on the right of the avi doesn't show up in the final!

Crappy
That is part of the original
Nevermind
EDIT 2:

THank you all for your help

When you select NTSC Film, it will choose 480x480. (It will look squished, but it will be stretched back in your player. So don't worry.)

Oh and as for this:

It's really up to your eyes. Truthfully, I can't tell the difference in quality, nor have I done really extensive tests either. If you ask me, someone saying one is better than the other is probably wrong. It really has to do with the source material and other settings. It's kind of like people wanting to use Deinterlace instead of IVTC. It's up to you.

[Edit] Hahaha, the little black bar is actually a good thing. That's part of the overscan from the original source. Which means that much more will be shown on your TV. Now you can get rid of it if you want to. Just go back to the clip frame and just crop it. I wouldn't bother.

heheh

as lon gas I can see the movie

I don't care about over scan or what not!!!!!!!!!!!!
and as long as the faces and stuff look right :) :) :)

Thanks a lot

Encoding stuff is the devil on my processor

It's ok

I don't sit too close to the tv to notice artifacts, and since i'm partially colourblind, the colours tend to mix together for me, like macroblocks in a shadowy area :)

I used Highest Quality 2 pass VBR, so I think that should weed most of the ugly blocks out

Wo@H!

Where do I select the final filesize!??!!?

or see an estimate of it?

It would be under bitrate setting... After setting it to 2-pass VBR, just change the bitrate until you get the size you want. If have a 90 minute movie, just set it to 200% of an 80min CD-R (300% if you want 3 discs). Then just demux and split using bbMPEG. Which you can find guides to do that on doom9.org. You can also split it before you encode, by using VirtualDub to split it in half. So you have a good spot at cut off. (But if you were going to use DVD2SVCD anyways, then the split would be anywhere. So that's no bother.)

When I said make it as PAL, I meant everything including the sizing rules and framerate, but I didn't know that your original had a non standard size. The PAL videos I have downlaoded were already the normal PAL TV size either for VCD or SVCD. Trying to alter it further is beyond what I know how to do.

Good luck,
Mark

That's why I recommended TMPGEnc's templates. It's great for non standard fps and resolutions.

As for the bitrate setting, it's not in the other settings tab, it's the next page of the wizard and should look like this (http://aoslinna.keenspace.com/images/tmpgenc.gif).

This probably should be moved to another forum, since it's no longer DVD2SVCD and now TMPGEnc...

I was about to move it, but it seems to be done. No harm done.
