Add keyframes to an AVI without reencoding?

If this is a newbie post, then please forgive me for it. this seems like the correct place for it however.

I was able to get a copy of the Japanese version of The Ring from a source. The problem was that the file had corruption and although it was largely complete it couldnt be played. Divfix also couldnt fix it. So I had to use Nandub to cut out the bad part and the end to watch it.

I went through all of that and i got the bad part cut out however the problem is now that since it couldnt determine the key frames in the AVI because of the corruption at the end credits (and I couldnt get nandub to manually check for them until I got the corruption out of the file) whenever you search the file it takes 10 minutes to do it.

I couldnt figure out a way to get nandub to rekey the file without re-encoding the file which I want to avoid because it picks up stuck pixels and blur at points. I also cant use Virtualdub to do it because it dosnt like the VBR mp3 in the AVI. Any suggestions?

PS. if reencoding is the answer anyone have a good way to resize the file easily so that I can encode it in divx 5 instead of 3?

When you press "Open Video File" in Nandub, in the following window were you select your file you can check a box that says "Popup extended open options". In there is something called "Rederive Keyframe Flags".

Have you already tried this to get your keyframes back? (Afterwards just save in direct stream copy mode so it won't be reencoded).

Thank you. I knew it was something stupid. I was assuming items were checked when they wernt. duh on my part. :D

Hey Ryokurin-

I have the same one. I just wound up re-encoding it. It goes quickly since you're re-encoding an .avi. It looks OK.
