I have a Xvid movie I would like to play on my standalone player...
Can I go thru the steps in the guides and make a new DVD from this, or is it better to store the mpg files on one dvd and play as an svcd on a dvd disk?
Obviously the latter requires less work, but will it actually work in a standalone player (toshiba 220)...

I don't understand. Do you still have the original DVD?
Why make SVCD files of the Xvid and put on DVD-R?
Isn't it better to follow the DVD to DVD-R guide?
Do you mean that you have the XviD movie but you also have a copy of the original DVD copied directly to SVCD?
Please give us more information.
You'll loose quality when you convert from one format to another if it includes additional re-encoding. So if you have possibility to play SVCD files copied directly from the original this will probably be much better than transcoding from XviD.

easiest is to drop it into tmpg and it should sort out the aspects a lot easier than trying to do it all in avisynth and serve it to CCE.

And if you don't like tmpg's encoding speed, set it to DVD spec in tmpgenc and then framserve to CCE.
