View Full Version : mpeg-4 user tries mpeg-2: video jerks & no audio

Hi folks,

since I'm doing mpeg-4 (XviD) 360days/year, there are only 2-3 days/year left for SVCDs ... and I'm having some problems:

Lately, I made an SVCD with DVD2AVI+CCE 2.5, mostly default settings, audio 160kbps/stereo.

1. My friend's player (only VCD capable acc. to manual) plays that thing fine ... but NO AUDIO at all.

2. The video does stutter: every one second, the movie jerks (stands still for a second's fraction)

3. On a PC w/PowerDVD, it plays correctly (with audio)

4. Checked the unmuxed and muxed mpeg-streams: the unmuxed stream (video only) plays smooth on PC. The muxed (with audio) has the same stutter even on PC.

Can some mpeg-2 pro shed some light here? I suspect the settings for muxing, but I'm a n00b here.

I'm doing SVCDs so seldom - I don't have the time (nor the will) to experiment much in this area.

Any tips are welcome!

Thx a lot

Are you using DVD2SVCD? It's an actual program and this forum is dedicated to it.
If not I can move this to the SVCD forum.

In any case it really sounds like an issue with the DVD player. Check the list over at www.vcdhelp.com and be sure to read the comments. Sometimes you need specific settings to get it to work.

sounds like vbr rather than cbr for your sound.

I'm moving this thread to the proper section, if you are talking about dvd2svcd then it can be moved back, but what i'm understaning your using a different method and since this section is dedicated to dvd2svcd this would not be the place for your question.

i don't think vbr sound would mess it up on the pc tho...i know when i mux with tmpg sometimes it does this (the video is jerky and the sound sometimes is very weird)...the solution is to remux with bbmpeg

Well, indeed I am using DVD2SVCD.

I don't trust my friend's player too much, but that seems not to be the problem.
Since the playback is also choppy on my PC, there must be something wrong with the muxed data stream.
I already tried to simply mux again, but the result is the same.
Can it make a difference if audio is stereo or joint stereo? The fact it's vbr sould be okay, though: after all, it's mpeg-2...

I figured the following:
When playing the *.mpv stream in a dshow player, by default the audio filter delivered by my ATI card jumps in -> "perfectly choppy"
When opening in PowerDVD, its own filters jump in -> much better, but still noticeably choppy.

In any case, only the video stutters: audio plays smooth - on PC.
The problem with this standalone player is weird: I would expect it to either play SVCD somehow, or not at all. But playing the video and audio not? When I feed that player with a DVD with an mpeg audio track, it plays fine

[OMG, mpeg-4/XviD/Vorbis/OGG is so easy to do ... ]

As an SVCD n00b, I'm clueless what tricks I should try to do in this case.

Waiting for the "bingo!" idea ...

Okay, I do some funny self-quoting, too ;)

The muxing was done with bbmpeg.

Just to clarify again: I'm doing the DVD2SVCD standard procedure, with CCE 2.5 for video encoding.

TMPEG is not involved at all (I suppose).

Well depending if you have hardware acceleration turned on in power dvd for the video card, a movie can be a bit choppy have you checked that setting? Also you should always post your dvd2svcd log file just makes life easyer for us to help you and for you to get an answer so if you could post that it might help.

On a last note, Your title was a poor choice not only that i've seen you have posted in this forum plenty of times in the past so you should know how things work around here so next time keep that in mind when you choose your title.

Thank you all for the tips so far, but:

Forget it, guys.

I am not willing to go through huge amounts of hassle, just to do a favour to some people that laugh about PC-video, are proud instead of their standalone, but can't do much with it ...
Plus, I'd have to build a database for the special settings I'd have to use for every single friend's player ...
Plus all that time&space that's needed for a HiQ SVCD ...

I will do my mpeg-4, it's superior anyway, and keep rolling my eyes to heaven when anyone asks me about doing an SVCD.
My answer to them will be "L.M.A.A" (German abbreviation)

My personal stuff is working pretty well, the rest is unimportant to me (regarding the given topic).

@ chainsaw135

Honestly, I have seen threads with poorer titles than this one.
But never mind - I will not disturb the circles of the SVCD forums very often ;)

Peace

Well that might be true, but your title was about as poorer as it gets to be honest with you. And your not disturbing the forum circles, just make sure you put a better title next time or you will get striked for it. Thats all i wanted you to understand:)
