I'm a newbie and here's my "wants":

I want to take a DVD-movie with 6channel surround audio and convert it into a 2CDR DivX5-movie with some sort of re-encoded 6channel surround audio. I DON'T want the audio to be plain-Jane 2channel, as I want to archive the movie and enjoy it many years from now. I also DON'T want separate files for video and audio. Just one file with video and audio together... a direct stream copy, I think they call it.

BELOW I NEED SPECIFIC ANSWERS ON "WHAT" VALUES TO CHANGE WITHIN GKNOT. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM TALKING ABOUT "THERORY" AND THE "WHY's" (which is interesting to know... its just that I want the down-and-dirty how-to's for now):

1) Based on my "wants" above... in the Bitrate tab of GKnot, under the Interleaving&AVI-Overhead section, what option do I choose to get a direct stream copy of a 6channel audio track? What exactly do I checkmark, what values do I choose?

2) Once I fill out the Interleaving&AVI-Overhead section correctly, what do I put in the "AUDIO A" section? What exactly do I checkmark, what values do I choose?

3) Once I get all that, what values do I put in the "AUDIO 1" tab in the final Save&Encode Divx5 options section? (the section where you drag in the audio file from the DVD2AVI-rip and set the parameters for the final mux) What exactly do I checkmark, what values do I choose?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!

I have no personal experience in this field, but wouldn't the best option be just to mux the .ac3 with the avi? I believe doom9 describes how to use .ac3 instead of mp3 in his DivX 5 guide.

There are two ways to retain surround sound.

1) Mux the Dolby Digital (.ac3) stream into your .avi, as N_F described. You will either need a DD capable sound card, or you can use the Audio Filters from Doom9's Download to play back with a standard PC audio system -- though with 2 speakers, you won't hear more than stereo. Rather than transcoding to .mp3 as per the guide, you select the appropriate .ac3 file and "just mux." Interleaving with .ac3 may need to be adjusted, there is a FAQ in the Audio forum which can give you guidance. In GKnot, select 1-ac3 for overhead, and select the .ac3 file itself in the Audio A section of the bitrate tab.

2) Using GKnot's BeSweet (Azid/LAME) transcoding to MP3 stereo, surround sound will be transcoded to Dolby Surround (TM), and a Dolby ProLogic analog decoder will be able to retrieve it from the stereo tracks.

Hi-

You probably could have found the answers in less time than it took to type that out. As N_F said, it's in the Guides. And based on the way you phrased your questions, a little reading might do you some good.

Get the AC3 Audio track when getting the vobs with Smart Ripper or DVD Decrypter, or when in DVD2AVI. If you find the DD5.1 track is too large for your needs, you might consider transcoding down to 256kbps using Doom9's AC3Machine Guide (http://www.doom9.org/ac3machine.htm). Once you have what you want, enter the file size in KB in the Bit Rate Tab of GKnot under Audio A. Also enter 1x AC3 under the Interleaving portion. Then when in the Encoder Tab, the Audio size and Overhead should be already listed at the top. In the Audio 1 Tab, Select your Audio Source File (if it hasn't been already). Then tick Just Mux. Fill in the delay if there is one (you can find it in the AC3 file name). As for Interval and Preload, you can try 2 frames and 160 .ms. That's not guaranteed to work though. That is, it may play jerky after being muxed with the video. You may be better off muxing yourself when all done. For this you'd use Nandub and the values suggested in the AC3 Q & A. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18318). Good Luck.

You beat me again, jggimi:)
