I have not had any sucess with Memorex DVD-R and Verbatim DVD-R 2x. Sony DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD+R work fine. Anyone else?

actually in the case of verbatim there is a know compatablity problem that for some reason doesnt work with the DRU500A, it has been fixed but you might have an older batch sent out before the fix, you might wanna call verbatim and have them replace them.

I've also had problems with the Memorex DVD-Rs (all coasters, giving me an error at about 90%). I've ordered some dual-sided Primedisc (Ritek) that I'm gonna try once they arrive. I'll keep you guys updated.

I have done over 20 Ritek DVD-R burns w/ the DRU500a and not one coaster yet:)

vw671, what speed did you burn them at?? Just curious

1x, you don't have any other choice. The drive detects the speed of the media and will only burn at that speed. I'm sure given enough time someone will hack the firmware to disable this:)

Well users have been reported a lof of failure with this drive
Especially with cheap media...

And even some Verbatim X2 DVD-R do not work only in the Sony drive :(

I was able to get a Memorex DVD-R to work using Ulead DVD Workshop 1.2. I authored the DVD and then let it do the burning. Tested in PS2, but didnt work too well in computer. Strange! As far as that Verbatim issue.. that is a Verbatim issue, NOT Sony.

Well according to Verbatim their x2 DVD-R work perfectly in ALL the other DVD burners, except the Sony  You have to admit that it's kinda weird.

Yes it is weird, but if Verbatim is going through all the trouble of recalling their media, then they had something to do with it.

I have just burned several DVD-R Verbatims at 2x using recently purchased media (15 pack from Best Buy). I have had great results also with the following media on the Sony DRU-500a:

PrimeDisc 9.4GB DVD-R at 1X
PrimeDisc 4.7GB DVD+RW at 2.4X
Pioneer DVS-47A/U DVD-R at 2X
Fuji DVD+RW at 2.4x
Fuji DVD+R at 2.4x
Sony DVD+RW at 2.4X
Memorex DVD-RW at 1X
Verbatim 4.7GB DVD-R at 2X (recent purchase)

Two month old Verbatim would only burn reliably at 1X.
15 packs I have bought recently work fine.

I'll never buy Memorex dvd-r's again - had 3 of a 5 pack bad
(and that was pre-Sony on my A03).

Most of these were burned with the 1.0c firmware; but I have also tested most of these with 1.0d. I'm using Nero 5.5.9.17.

I burned ok:
SONY DVD+RW @ 2.4x (Using Nero)
Verbatium DVD+R @ 2.4x (Using RecordNow MAX)
Memorex DVD-R @ 1x (Using Nero)
Memorex DVD-RW @ 1x (Using Nero, RecordNow MAX)

After patch 1.0d CD burning preporation was faster

I have used Recordnow Max 4.5 will all my burnings......with the latest pxengineupdate358 from the veritas site not from the stomp.inc site .....also i am using frimware 1.0d

Haven't had success with (Coasters) he following:

Imation DVD-R 1x

I've used ACCU from Meritline.com with no problem at 1x DVD-R format...$1.18 each in a 25 pack shipping included.

I just wanted to add that the Memorex DVD-R i burned to copy a PS2 game did not work in the PS2. But!!, after making an image from the Memorex with DVD Decryptor and then burning that image to a Ritek with Nero, the game worked. So... it REALLY is the media!!!

I bought some ProMedia DVD-R and DVD-RW from TigerDirect because they were so cheap that it didn't matter to me. They have all worked great!

I also bought a Memorex DVD-R and it failed on me even with the latest firmware in the Sony. I think I will stay away from Memorex from now on too.

Update:

Using the new 1.0f Firmware from Sony:

PrimeDisc 9.4GB DVD-R now burns at 2X!

This saves me a lot of time because I prefer the double-sided media.
My Pioneer A03 will only write 1X on these.

Nice job Sony!
