how do I set virtualdub to capture in the background?

I would like to work on other things while I capture but don't know how; the captureing stops when I try to minimize virtualdub. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Generally that's not a good idea. There is a high probability of getting a lot of dropped frames if you work on the computer while capturing.

Capturing with minimized VirtualDub works at least with timed captures. Which VirtualDub version do you use? What are your computer's specs?

If you disable the "abort on left mouse button" feature in "Capture->Settings", you can try to do some other stuff while capturing. I can read emails for example without getting frame drops, but I usually avoid to work while capturing.

It's a good idea anyways to disable the abort on left mouse button feature because I like to be able to move the volume slider without ending the capture.

It depends on your cpu and other comp specs, but it is possible to do things while you capture. I don't know about VirtualDub, but I can capture with Ulead VideoStudio, download from an FTP and DivX-encode a movie at the same time without any frame drops. (brag, brag) :)

I believe that as long as you can set the priority lower on the processes (in my case FTP:ing and DivX:ing) and raise the capturing process's priority, then you can get away with it. But I definitely would not recommend doing active work (surfing, etc) while you capture.

It also depends on where you capture to and what your hardware is. If your capture drive is a single master drive (or even better: SCSI drive) that is only used for capturing and you have a dual cpu system, then you'll hardly get any dropped frames no matter what else you do :)

You are talking about DV capturing through firewire, right? This is something totally different...

or i capture and surf in the inet. nah, not really. I only chat!
or write with notepad...

perhaps one dropped frame more (i usually have 3 in an half hour with huffyuv and 0 with picvideo)!

Nope! I'm talking about "regular capturing", just using VideoStudio and capturing with Mpeg-2 encoding, instead of VDub and HuffYuv or Mjpeg, like you do.

I capture and do other stuff all the time. Washing dishes, doing laundry, chewing gum... :D

But seriously, I find when I do stuff in the background (and bearing in mind I have a 2200 XP) it's generally ok except if I move or minimize a window and VDub has to redraw its statistics panel. That's when I get a lot of drops, like 20-30 in one go. Probably minimizing it is the answer, I've not tried that yet ;).

Leaving the preview in overlay mode and minimizing the VDub window very much reduces the processor load. I always do that when I'm leaving after having set the timer in VDubVCR.

btw. I'm almost always running Seti@home commandline from a RAMDisk while I'm capturing. As long as programs have lower priority and don't access the capture harddrive, they don't hurt.

I have a medion PC pentium 4 2ghz 512mbytes DDR RAM

I think that's enough power to avoid frames by virtualdub won't allow me to minimize without stopping capturing

Nope. If you want to minimize VDub without stopping the capture, turn off "Abort on left mouse button" in capture -> settings.
