microDVD (+grf) & XP SP1

Although I think that XCD being a new standard will lead us to a better future, I still have to use microDVD player for my 120 movies encoded as microDVDs. For having more than one audio-stream on a microDVD I used the graphedit-files (refer to manual).

And now my problem: after upgrading my WinXP Corp with SP1, I can't play microDVDs any longer. Even if I try to open the grf-files directly using MediaPlayer 6.4 or graphedit, I get an error.
So I created new grf-files & compared them in notepad with those burnt to CD with "old" WinXP, no difference.

So where's the problem? I would be really very happy if someone has an idea!! (Don't want to loose all my lovely movies due to m$-strategies)

Is there any change in DirectX in SP1, or what happens?

Does really nobody have a problem with that?

AFAIK it is caused by DirectX 8.1 and unless M$ changes it's behaviour in 9.0 it'll stay that way. Use some player that allows you to select video, audio and subtitles individually (MPC @ http://vobsub.edensrising.com ^_^)

Thanks for reply, but "old" XP (without SP1) also offers DirectX 8.1 (i'll check the real build-nr)!!

I compared again the grf-files of XP SP1 with those created before applying SP, again, no difference was found.

I'm getting mad!!

Using another player is no good for me, I have 120 movies that require microDVDPlayer!! contain not only several audio&subs, but also menu, specials...

Which files are involved in this lock-out-strategy of M$? Can I make a patch-down using files of XP before SP1-install??

NOw I know why there is no difference in the newly created grf-files, they don't work either in WMP, but only in graphedit itself, so it's really a stupid lock-out!!

well, they DO work in wmp - but all relative paths have c:\ as their root instead of .\ So if you really want them to work, copy all your files to root of the C: drive ^_^

There was quite a commotion when this problem appeared in this very forum, you can search for it. Unfortunatelly up to this date no solution was found (leaving me as well with a few CDs that I have to run through virtualdub first when I want to watch them...).

Workaround:

two ways:
1. extract SP1.exe to harddisk & delete quartz.dl_, so it doesn't get updated, then graphedit files work correctly in WMP as well as in microDVD player.

2. if you already have updated to SP1, get quartz.dll from another machine or from XP-CD (using commline extract) and restore it in save-mode (can't be done "online")

MicroDVDs work again like a charm:D ;) :p

Hoping in the meanwhile that M$ solve the problem, which is the best method to obtain dual audio without installing players like Zoom Players & co. and open avi in WMP 6.4 (so that also MicroDVD could handle it)? I thought about Morgan switcher but read in this forum it create many problems with Ac3.

First of all, I don't think that Microsoft calls this a bug, but a feature, I guess, they want us to keep away from using this mode, but use only their shitty windows media files.

But I hope you're right & there will be a fix, because I guess that with next windows (Longhorn) my patch won't work anymore, I tried to use quartz.dll from win2k in winxp (for comparison) and didn't work.

Morgan is useful for WMP6.4, but doesn't work with microDVD-player because this one offers no context-menu.

Because of Direct Vobsub I use for subtitles, the context menu with all avi filters used (the Morgan too), appears in the green Direct Vobsub arrow that take place in system tray when movie starts. Thx to this i can reach Morgan poroperties and switch through audio streams also in MicroDVD, but it seems to be a little (very little)unstable. So I'm searching 4 an alternate more stable way of use for dual audio. any suggestion?

Well, my patch!:D

BTW, why using morgan with microDVD? by using morgan, microDVD becomes useless, can't switch streams in the interface itself anymore, so why do you use it? Morgan is an alternative to microDVD, if Longhorn will not be patchable, but really no addition to microDVD.
