View Full Version : Smearing effect

I downloaded a XviD movie (Austin Powers 3 to be exact) and when I launched it in Media Player 6.x, a lot of artifacts occured on the screen. Actually only one BIG one. The picture smears out, like it is missing a key frame or so. But not occasionally, but all the time. I tried different XviD binaries, media players and options. Only solution was to load it up in VirtualDub 1.4.8, where it played flawlessly. I tried DivXFix to no avail. I also tried to delete the first 100 frames (where I expected the error to have it's origin), also no effect.
Now since I'm rathere new to XviD and I got some XviD movies, I was wondering if this was a known bug ? Or maybe a problem on my rig.

It's not a bug, nor the encoding; your download is corrupted. Sorry, but the AVI-format isn't very well-guarded against errors.

Ok, I will download it again and post the result.
Thanks.

@Sharkbyte
I think the problem you are talking about has something to do with qpel and ffdshow. Try playing the movie without ffdshow. Check 'use xvid' in the ffdshow codec settings. I'll bet this fixes your error. Until further notice ffdshow won't playback qpel. I'm unsure if this is a problem with the codec or ffdshow itself.
Let me know if this helps.

Strange, ffdshow has no problem decoding A.P. 3 (DLV?) over here, not using XviD...

Yea, the artifacts or whatever seen on dvl-ap3 are like nothing I've ever seen before...very interesting! Here is a capture using ffdshow-alpha w/ xvid-stable (although its just like this at seeks). Not that I really care, though, I'll just get the DVD eventually.

_just use xvid to decode that and disable ffdshow for dev-api-3 encodes_ - and your artefacts are gone.

how odd! nothing like that on my end, with just ffdshow, no decoding via xvid.ax.
