I've been through 3 100x80min blank disc spools in the last 3-6 months of using it, and have had to build my own 7 foot CD tower stand to hold all my DVD2SVCD converts.
Dang!

:D yeah i totally understand your problem:) but seriously i've changed the way i back up my svcd's since harddrives are so cheap i've now kept most of my images on the hardrive and when i wanna view a movie i take my 12x cdrw's and burn them as needed as my apex 5131 places cdrw's as well.

Ahhh, but don't forget the joy of DLT tapes :) Espcially when the company has a robotic system with 8*40GB tapes, enough for some hours of pleasure :)

I've had to order cheap blank discs from Denmark as the Finnish prices would have ruined me long ago:D Is this some kind of conspiracy, dvd2svcd?

Worst is, that you now lack the time to see movies cause your PC is busy encoding. Really DVD2SVCD is our DOOM!

Here in the States you can get them free or for just a couple of dollars after rebate for 50 or 100 pack spindle. I have no idea how these people can make money, but I have about 400 80 minute CD-R discs sitting on my shelf that if I paid $15 for them I paid too much.
You just have to pounce at the right time and keep an eye out and you are set for next to nothing.

@dvd2svcd: Damn, I should have known that..although the shipping costs would have been larger but still..
@markrb: Here you can only dream of such things. A 100 CD spindle costs between 80 and 100 euros here, I'm not sure how much that is in US dollars but I think it's almost the same amount. The thing that keeps empty CD prices up is that we have to pay a specific "copyrights fee" for each empty CD. Soon there will be a law in Finland that prohibits any copying, and it means that you can't even copy a DVD or a CD that you own. And I may hear you ask "what will happen to that fee I mentioned?" - my guess is that it won't be removed:mad:
Enough of this rant..I've never thanked you for your excellent program, dvd2svcd, but I do now. Thanks, it's really great despite the amount of CDs it consumes:cool:

Mark,
I wish they were that cheap in Australia, usually you can pick up spindle packs in the cheapo stores and you still pay about AU$30.00 for 50. But still, most movies fit on 2 CD's, and you can pick up a blank DVD case for about $1.00, so a DVD backup for <$3.00 still aint bad value.

I can't be bothered about CD prices. If you consider how much each CD created so far will cost once you include the overhead... Aside from the 3 spindles, there is the athlon 2000+ station, modest memory, the 5.1 Speaker setup with that dpl2 receiver, the standalone, a good burner, and plenty of time time time. If you are paid minimum wage for the time you spend learning and ripping and editing and improving and testing and... you could surely have bought the DVDs a second time, all of them! This is madness and we are, by any reasonable angle of view, all completely insane!
We are suffering from the "do it yourself syndrome". We don't like the ready made stuff that won't require our skills. We need a task. This one is endless...

Mark I can vouche (sp?) for that. Here in IL, you can waltz over to Best Buy, or even over the net, grab a couple/few hundred spindles of nice Verbatim DataLife 80min discs, for about $2-3 after rebates (usually instant rebates, at that). I love it :D
I too don't see how these people make their money...

i was reading that less than 10% of the rebates that are given out actually are turned in...so manufactures count on you not turning it in, which for the most part is true. this is how they make their money

I for one turn in my rebates:DDD as i live in illinois myself and see the same deals as UltimateDBZ at the best buy in town

I always turn in my rebates, an extra $10-15 here and there can make a difference in a High Schooler's budget :D Most of the rebates are Instant, however, so the trouble of filling stuff out, mailing it in, etc. really isn't a big deal.

Yes, UX-3 you are absolutely right. This stuff is about being insane like rarely seen in any other area. Just consider if we did the same in our everyday work, I mean spending hours and hours tweaking, searching for the optimal settings, testing again and again, damn, the company we work in would be closed by now and we wouldn't even have money to buy a good cd-burner :p
I still have to ask some shrink about why we guys accept to spend so much time on these things... Just tell me I have to spend that amount of time cleaning the house (someone does ask me this on a regular basis, guess who...) and I'll immediately start to cry like a baby :D
We are mad...but it's good to be mad ;)

The answer is quite simple - we are Men. We would never ask our wifes do do the disks. We are oriented towards results. This yields results. Watchable results, improvable results. They are oriented towards processes. They'd go out and buy them. They enjoy the process and don't care about the result. Cleaning a house never yields any result you can show in two days.
The younger ones here will have to learn that striving for perfection is a deadly desease, if you never hear yourself saying: Perfect! At some stage, you should say "perfect" and let it be.

"Men, Men, Men, Men, Men, Men" Monty Python
"Say Housework and he Freezes" Anya from Bufy the Vampire Slayer singing about Xander.
ux-3 I think you are close to say the reason is becuase we are Men, but I think we need to say "Geeky Men" that puts us closer to the right group.
Although I love sports I am no jock. Although I love cars I am no mechanic. I can change a lightbulb and mice don't make me run and hide.
So I safely fall in the Men catagory, but lean towards the computer Geek.
But I would trade it all to have a womens ability to have multiple %#$$%%%^.

We really do have it good in the US when it comes to making SVCDs.
I have a local grociers that has $0.87 rental (5 days) for older DVDs and $1.87 for new rentals (1 day). I rent 3-6 at a time, rip to Hard Disk and then make SVCDs for the next few days. Just start DVD2SVCD when I go to work, sleep, etc. Sweet!
Not only are the CD-Rs cheap here...we even have mail order DVD rental. Most places have a 1 month free, then $20 (~20 Euro) per month after the trial. You can keep 3 at a time, so return the 3 after ripping and the next ones in your queue are sent out upon receipt! I just sign up then cancel, go to next place and then cancel...so on, so forth. They even mail them to me!
I have 8 X 50CD spindles of SVCDs. Hell, havent even seen 1/2 of them yet and still making more!
We're men damnit, we love having stuff...besides, when I eventually lose my job I'll have tons of movies to watch. ;)

Tut tut homegrown. Don't you know that DVD2SVCD is for creating legitimate backups of your own DVD's.
Shame on you.;) :D
Next thing you know, you will tell me you scan the covers too.

I would really love for some psycology student to read this post and do a paper on it, I think that Homegrowns comments about not even having watched half of the copies he has made would make for an interesting analasys, and I am damn sure he would not be alone. Why make a copy of a movie and then not even watch it? Ahhh the joys of being a result oriented male...
