problem ripping SPR

i ripped saving private ryan and just wondering what res do i use because in smartripper and dvd2avi it says its 16:9 yet there is no black borders? when u view the d2v in gordian knot which i just use to get idea what to crop and what bitrate to use its full screen.. it shows it as having no black borders either so.. it says i should resize to 640x352? since i seleted 16:9 anamorphic .. is that right or should it be 640x272 like most widescreen movies.. and its widescreen on a dvd player.. so what do i do hehe

A resolution of 640x352 is perfectly normal for 16:9 when you have no black borders. 640x272 (2.35:1) seems the most usual, but I've also seen a few 16:9 movies at 640x352 (1.85:1) or 640x336 (1.90:1), it all depends on how large the black borders are.

But I suggest going a down with your resolution, because that one is quite a difficult movie to compress. Unless you're willing to go for 3 or 4 CD's that is :).

I hope you've had some experience with this, because SPR is one of the least compressible movies ever made. Yes, the DAR, or Display Aspect Ratio is 16:9, but the movie AR is 1.85:1, and not 2.35:1 as your 640x272 resolution implies. It's anamorphic widescreen which explains the absence of black bars. So, as long as you've checked 16:9 in GKnot (default), and keep an eye on the Aspect Error, then you can't go wrong when resizing.

And I don't think you'll wind up using 640x352 unless you're prepared to use 4 or 5 CDs on that movie. Make sure you run a compress test on it before settling on the final resolution.

And maybe Doom9's article on Aspect Ratios Explained (http://www.doom9.org/aspectratios.htm) will help explain what's going on.

Use DivX502, 640x352 resolution, take 3 CD's and your 128 Kbbs MP3 file and you will get a very good rip! :D
