If I encode an AVI using the Divx5 Pro codec, (just bi-directional option) must someone play it only with the Pro version? If played with the non-pro version, will there be perceptable differences?

The decoder is in both instances exactly the same, so anything encoded with the Pro version can be played perfectly with the Lite version.

You don't need DivX at all for playback, if you install the famous ffdshow filter.
