re: copying xvid causes frame errors

I am trying to copy an xvid file over a network. At the source, it does not show any errors in the video frames. However, after copying to the destination drive, an error appears at a specific frame. I have tried copying it several times and get the same error at the same frame. I realize I could probably zip or rar and then copy but first, that's one extra step, and secondly, this implies there is something corrupt about this file which only shows up when I try to copy it over a network. Any ideas? This is probably a stupid question...so be it

It's improbably that that is caused by an Xvid problem.
It seems impossible, but probably it's caused by incorrect
network drives.
Try to upgrade them.
You should experience the same problem even transferring
other (big) files types.
I had a similar problem with other file types
(even zips) that was solved upgrading the network drives.

Excessive network collisions will corrupt AVI files, I've seen it happen myself. Try changing your network switch/NIC's to half duplex or use the Ogg container instead which can handle corrupt data much better.

Thread should maybe be moved elsewhere as this doesn't pertain to XviD encoding?

The bad frame occurs on the same frame though. In other words, the problem is not that different frames are corrupted every time I copy over the network. It is a certain frame that gets corrupted each and every time. This is why I thought it was more akin to a problem with xvid or the file itself rather than the network transfer corrupting the avi randomly.

How can this be an XVid problem ?
If you see correctly a file on comp A and see it incorrectly
on comp B it's either :

1) the transmission of file from A to B is incorrect, that is
file on comp B is different than file on comp A.
I know for sure that faulty drivers are sensible to specific
byte patterns in the data stream and that they incorrectly transfers
them across the net.

2) on the two comps you have something different :
player, decoder, system dlls, ecc...
try to transfer other files between the same comps
and see what happens, or try to send the same file to
a third computer, or try to reinstall the same version
of player/decoder on both computers.
