View Full Version : How to set "split" points and file sizes?

First the "generic" questions, then the example with numbers so it makes sense.

1) With a VOB set loaded in DVD2AVI, the counter shows the time inside the VOB, not total elapsed time. How can I see total time so I can pick the exact start and stop places?

2) How are the start and stop times given to Gordian Knot to tell it what to process? I suspect that can be done with the [ and ] keys in DVD2AVI before saving the d2v project, right?

3) How do I tell Gordian Knot a specific file size or bitrates for a given source? All I see are target file sizes that are pre-determined, not something I can adjust.

OK, the release I'm trying to do this with is Kate & Leopold and I only want the video and English AC3 track.

Vobs 1-7 are the full movie at 2:24.25
Vobs 12-15 are various support video totaling 0:29.26

The total time is right around 2:53.51

What I'd like to do is create a 2-CD set. The first CD will have 10M reserved space (for decoder, autoloader, etc.) so it has 690M available. The second CD will have 2M reserved so it has 698M available.

That means the 2:53.51 should fit in 1388M.

My plan is to put all of the support video and the first part of the movie on disc 1, each in its own file. I'd like to put the "split" for the movie around the 0:57.29 point but the actual point will be at a scene break. I'd prefer to average bitrate to be very uniform across all 6 generated DivX files.

FWIW, I'm using the auto-loader at http://www.whirlywiryweb.com to load an HTML splash page/menu from which the individual files are chosen. This allows the inclusion of mirrored websites on the disc. For example, a DivX of a Nova show can include the companion website and it's all auto-loading.

Uh...except for the change discs part. Havne't figured out how to make that work just right. There should be some kind of user prompt but I haven't figured that out just yet. Maybe ejeting the CD will work because that should force the open stuff to close and run the auto-loader on the newly inserted disc.

You can't. At least not with DVD2AVI. On the other hand, DVD2AVI lists the time within a VOB ID, not a VOB FILE. Most movies have a single VOB ID for the whole movie, but uses a number of VOB FILES (usually 3-8)
Just so. [ equals start position and ] equals stop position. You can also use the trim command in AVIsynth to get better precision as DVD2AVI will only allow you to set splitpoints at keyframes.
By clicking in the box that says total file size you are able to manually enter a desired filesize. It is a little confusing, but if you replace one digit at th time it will work.

Wow. That was quick. Thanks.

OK, I've loaded the files into DVD2AVI and I see a list of Vob Cells.

Is there a util that will load the set and show which cells are in each file and the lengths, preferably of each VOB? That would work.

Doesn't matter to me if it's total time or offset within a part (cell?) as long as there is a way to translate to/from total time.

Well, I don't know if it possible when you have ripped the files. That probably depends on how you ripped them among other things. When you rip DVD's then it is at least possible to see the length of each program chain (movie, extra etc.) if you use vStrip or Smartripper. Smartripper can also tell you the length of each chapter, but a chapter can contain a number of cells so it is not always possible to decide how long each cell is.
