Having just bought the ATI Radeon 8500 128MB at the CompUsa sale (150 USD) I am beginning to experience second thoughts. I still haven't opened the box and can return it within another week. I would be very grateful for any input that helps me decide.

This is what I would like to do:

1. Back up my VHS collection (mostly PAL but also some NTSC) to DVD or SVCD. I believe most of these tapes are Macrovision encoded.

2. Convert my DV tapes to DVD (I am aware that the card i bought does not have a firewire connection but I have a separate card for that).

3. Capture the occasional TV programme.

4. Possibly play DivX from hard drive and display on the TV set.

I have tried capturing through my digital camcorder and into the firewire card but that will not work for the stuff with macrovision protection. Also it would be more convenient to be able to have a permanent connection between VCR and PC.

The situation is complicated by the fact that I am moving back to Europe and I am worried that the card will not function well with PAL. I know that the built-in tuner is NTSC only but that in itself is not very important for me.

So in a nutshell; did I buy the right graphics card or is there a better alternative?

TIA
