Joe,

X4 type discs don't exist at present.

Where have you got the idea they do ?

Maybe from the fact that the first Sony DRU500A have been delivered?

Firmware 1.90 for Pioneer A03 was specialy made to fix problems with 4x media. So if there are problems with 4x media then they do exist.

they do exist.. but they cannot be bought yet. I suppose that when the A05 starts showing up in stores so will the 4x blanks.. but it may even take longer. Keep in mind that with new CD-RW drives the speed always increased before the appropriate blanks were available...

I too was looking for 4x dvd-r media and couldn't find them anywhere. I then went to eBay and found several instances of auctions advertising them. I used the "buy now" option and purchased 300 of them at $144 per 100. This is the title of the auction "100 PACK 4X DVD-R DVDR HQ BLANK MEDIA 4.7 GB". Incidentially, I am not screaming. The auction was in all caps. This price is better than most 2X prices I have come across. The seller has a +2809 rating. In the body of the add it mentions 4x two more times. I have bought through eBay hundreds of times and realize the potential for being ripped-off, but at this price, I had to take a chance. When they arrive I will try them and repost if you like.
Now for some other news. I also purchased a Sony DRU500A (well almost purchased) through Dell. They were not in stock, but promised delivery in 2 weeks. After 10 days, they pushed back the delivery date. I then did a search for other sources for this writer. Nobody seemed to have them in stock. I went to the horses mouth. I wrote to Sony asking when they will have units available for shipping. Their reply was "The DRU500A is currently not available for shipment and has been inactivated. I suggest you check back with us on a later date to see if the DRU500A will be reintroduced".
So Sony is no longer making them. I then checked the forums and everybody that had already received theirs rated them very high. I am not sure why Sony has dropped it. Perhaps they have found a flaw in their design that will only become apparent after some use.
I cancelled my order with Dell, then checked Compusa. They still had some in stock. I ordered it and it should arrive in 2 days. The only other choice was to wait until November (the official release of the Pioneer A05) or December (the official release of the NEC 1100).
I hope this info is of some use to potential "high-speed" DVDers

I'm sure that you bought these "WhiteLabel 1x-2x", based on a Princo dye, which claim that they are 4x certified, and only being labeled "2x" for legal issues.

Note that these discs have started to be sold before the 4x specs were ready :sly:

Even Best Buy advertised that they had the DRU500A! Anybody seen one there?

Chips144, where did you order the 4X blanks? Judysdeals?

I called Best Buy. They told me they don't stock the DRU500A in my local store. You might be able to order through them. I didn't try since I found Compusa still stocked them.

Yes, I bought 300 of the 4X disks form her eBay site using the Buy Now option. That was Saturday night. I haven't received a confirmation yet that they have been shipped.

The Judysdeals disks work good at 1X.... I'll be interested to see how they do at 4X...

I didn't say they work at 4x, I only said they're sold as "4x". That's a difference :sly:

According to Sony, the 1st true x4 DVD-R will not be available before December 2002...

http://www.verbatim.com/support/sonystatement.cfm

So I would not buy the ebay one, that's definitly a scam :(

You "do" realize that is off of virbatim's site right? Ever thought that they could be talking about themselves? Other companies could already have them made and are selling them, just like movies/games/appz are usually always available before the "official" release date.

Peace

I successfully recorded both on a Pioneer 105, both in 14min + some seconds, and results are stunning! ;)

The "4X" disks from Judysdeals arrived. Here is what I have discovered so far relative to burning with these disks in the Sony DRU-500A:

1. RecordNow Max doesn't support the writer. Their techs say that version 4.6, which will be available sometime in November, will support the drive.

2. RecordNow that came with the writer DOES support the Sony. The tech also told me that the version of this software that came with the Sony was released early by Sony. Incidentially, this is a very stripped down version of the Max program.

3. DVD Decryptor supports the drive.

4. CD Mate supports the drive for burning CD-R's. This program is not a dvd burning program.

5. None of the above dvd burning software when used with the Sony writer and the disks from Judysdeals will burn faster than 1X.

6. I gave some of these disks to my friend who has a Pioneer 103. Again only 1X burning. I have read that their is a patch for this burner that would allow these disks to be burned at 2X, but I can't verify this.

7. I wrote to Judysdeals about this and they replied that the Sony writer is too new and that it will only write at 4X with Sony branded 4X disks ($10 each). They said that a hardware patch would be required for burning with these disks at faster speeds than 1X. Nobody has as yet authored a patch for it. They also said that the construction of the disks and the materials used does conform to the requirements for burning at 4X. I have no way to prove or disprove this. I do, however, know from some past experiences that certain blank disks could only be used in my CDRW after a patch was applied.

8. They do work well at 1X.

So the bottom line for me is to continue using these disks at 1X. Keep searching forums for other users experiences with the Sony DRU-500A. Perhaps there is a guru out there somewhere who will be able to come up with a patch to go beyond 1X with non-Sony Branded disks.

As far as I know, there are only 3 burners that will handle 4X DVD-R writing: the Sony DRU-500A, The Pioneer 105 and the new (to be released in December) NEC. A previous post claimed 4X writing with the Pioneer 105 using Pioneer disks. Has anyone else had any success with 4X writing. If so, what writer and what brand disks?

what do you mean, RecordNow Max doesn't support the drive. I've been using it with it for a week now, I haven't tried any 4X's yet, but 1x and 2x work perfectly with it...

I'm using RecordNOw Max 4.5

The support person I talked to at StompInc.com said that the Sony DRU500-A was not supported in the version that was available for download at that time (version 4.1). I was also told at that time that support for this recorder will be included in the next to be released version. That version I was told was going to be numbered 4.6. Stomp instead released it as version 4.5, which is what you have and yes that version does support the drive.
