There are a bazillion postings on various forums, concerning the inability of various Philips DVD Players, especially the ones from the latest family (623, 723, 743), to play SVCD-type subs . I bid the bullet and bought a Philips 743, as the only other brand name, svcd-sub capable DVD in Greece, is a Marantz 4001 OSE (499 Euros) . Besides the fact that it sometimes"hiccups" on high bitrate passes, the subtitles that showed perfectly on my Far East made Cyberhome 212, show on the 743 for 2-3 minutes at a time and dissappear. And that's a LOT better than many Philips owners can get!!
I talk about SVCDs made with the latest D2S pre 22 or 109b3.
Now, being a nut about subtitles and having a vast collection of SVCDs made with various versions of D2S I put on a movie made with either Submux or an early version of Winsubmux, back from the time that some of the subs were "transparent". Surprise! Both CDS played all the way flawlessly!!! (some bitrate hiccups did occur, but subs were perfect!! So I put another "old" svcd on, this time I'm almost sure it was made with Winsubmux, from the time that I used yellow subs-no outline. They stayed on for about 20 mins!! Not bad...
Of course Log texts don't exist anymore, but here is the SVCDINFO.TXT from the "medium" movie (the "good one" doesn't have a SVCDINFO.TXT in the Extra folder) and after it is the SVCDINFO.TXT from a "bad" movie.
I'm puzzled.
Any suggestions welcome. Also I'm willing to do any test required :)
