I've now came accross 2 movies that will not work on DVD-R but work perfect when written to DVD+R.

So far I haven't managed to get arround this but I'm lucky enough to have both DVD- and DVD+ drives so I can get around it.

The movies are full backups of everything.

Vanilla Sky (Stops after selecting lanuage)
Lorenzo's Oil(Jerks then stops at Universal globe)

If anyone has any ideas on this or anyone has came accross any other movies that will work on DVD+ but not DVD- I'd love to hear.

Do they hang on a settop player only, or also in the burner itself? If they only hang in a settop player => don't use crap media!

They both hang at exactly the same place on the burner and standalone. I've written both to 5 different types of media all with the same results.

Datasafe Classic
White Label 1x
White Label Gen. 4 2x
Choice 2x
FWS

Very strange, James. I have not done Lorenzo's Oil but I've done Vanilla Sky (I really love that movie!) and did not have a problem with it. I have a Pioneer DVR-104 drive and burned it to Verbatim 2X media.

If it were a crap media problem (well, all of the 5 mentioned ones could be crap), they would at least work in the burner. That's what doesn't make sense to me, and that's why I'm pretty sure it's not a crap media issue.

Don't know if this has any bearing on the problem, this is the R2 version.

I have noticed one thing purely by accident, when I select a language and it hangs if I leave it a while on the standalone it actually starts playing the first title set which is a trailer and if I press menu up it comes and I can play the movie, must have been >2 mins!

I only discoverd this as I put the disc in and the phone rang.

As far is crap media, I've been using White Label 1x for about 6 months written >200 and Choice 2x for 4 months written >350 without any problem at all, it's only recently I've started trying other media through recomendation and trying to get a good 2x disc that will play in the majority of standalones.

I've found a good DVD+R at just £2.30 that has worked without any problem both in burner and about 22 standalones I've tried.

Reliable 2x DVD-R media at a resonable price in the UK anyone?

It's pretty unimportant how long you've used noname media without problems: They could start to sell a bad batch now, or sell media made by another manufacturer.
However, only very very bad media can't be read in the burner itself when having been written at 1x.

I have written a number of discs using the above media list after the problem with Vanilla Sky appeared and they all worked perfectly, for example out of a batch of 50 Datasafe Classic I've written 37 (all worked perfectly) and 3 copies of Vanilla Sky all doing the same thing, but as I said works perfect when I write it to DVD+R and DVD+RW.

Would be a bit of a fluke that the 3 from the batch I picked to write Vanilla Sky to where faulty.

Yes, that would be odd.
There is one faint possibility, but I'd need to get the ESM table to look into this: Could the movie contain weak sectors?
I'll look into ECMA-267 to investigate the possibility of creating weak sectors for dvd, but that will take some time.
But I doubt that there has been accidently created a weak sector...if they exist for DVD at all.
