xvid and cpu usage

I was curious how xvid compares to divx in cpu usage? Does xvid use way more processing then a divx encoded film? I just tried a xvid movie on my older system P3 600 o/c 672 and I found I was unable to play it without the audio being waaaaay off. I don't seem to have any problems with divx on that comp. I was just curious if it was just my comp or is xvid more cpu hungry?

Generally I've found Xvid to be less CPU-intensive, so check your postprocess-settings. You can easily kill your CPU by using too many options.

(But of course, the only way you can be sure is to compress one DVD to both codecs and see what usage you get.)

launch a forum search for ffdshow, downlad the latest version, install it, play around with the options and see if it helps

i have found quite the opposite then the inital poster here

i found that a full PAL res (768x576) encoded in DivX hiBiteRate (5,000) played back using 100% usage and in fact couldnt quite keep up

(CPU: Athlon 1700+ running @ 1824mhz, nForce2 chipset mem running @ 400DDR CL2.5)

i encoded the exact same section of film with Xvid @ i guess the same bitrate; threw in 5,000 into a 1-pass (same i did for the DivX)

and play back didnt breach 50% CPU usage

was VERY impressed to say the least!
never used Xvid til then, i will be investigating ;)
