I've tried 10 Princo 1x discs at 2x. My results:
2x Completed burns: 100%
2x Readable in Lite-On LTD-165H: 100%
2x SFV Verification Successful: 100%
2x "Normal" read speed (~9 minutes): 80%
2x "slow" read speed (~14 minutes): 20%
2x Playable in Apex 1100W set-top player: 60%
1x Completed Burns (~120 so far): 99%
1x Readable in Lite-On LTD-165H: 100%
1x SFV Verification Successful: 100%
1x "Normal" read speed (~9 minutes): 100%
1x "slow" read speed: 0
1x Playable in Apex 1100W set-top player: 100%
Conclusion: The discs work 100% at 2x for use in the Pioneer 104 or the Lite-On DVD-ROMs, but 4 of the 10 gave a "disc error" on the Apex 1100W set-top player. Both that were "slow-reading" in the Lite-On DVD-ROM did not work on the set-top player.
All that burned successfully showed no "pixelation" or read errors at the end of the disc. I create SFV files for all of my discs before burning them, and they all verified okay.
It appears safe to burn at 2x for data, but I wouldn't recommend it for set-top players.
Note: the compatability and performance of these $0.70 1x discs is superior to the "2x" advertised "white top" discs circulating under various names.
Edit: My "system":
2200+ Athlon, VIA KT333 motherboard, 768 MB RAM, Pioneer DVR-104 w/1.33 "2x" firmware. Software: Nero 5.5.9.14
