View Full Version : Changing default AVS parameters

Hi folks,

I did a few searches and didn't find anything on the subject of changing Gknot's default AVS values that it writes out in the script. I've looked in the registry and opened every file I could think of in the Gknot folder to find a way to change...say the default path that Gknot writes out for MPEG2DEC.dll as an example.

By default, Gknot will write out something like-
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\mpeg2dec.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\decomb.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\GreedyHMA.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\SimpleResize.dll")

What I'm looking to do is have Gknot write out the AVS files like-
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth2\plugins\MPEG2DEC3.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth2\plugins\SimpleResize.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth2\plugins\decomb.dll")

Hope the above makes some sense. Anyone else figure out how to change the paths permanently rather than editing the AVS files each time?

atm not possible.
gknot's successor will be highly configurable.

sorry MaTTeR, you have to wait a while... :(

Ok, that's what I was thinking but thought it was worth asking.

Thx anyways.

Hi MaTTeR-

Gee-I'd like to return something to you because DSPGuru pointed us to a post of yours giving your stamp of approval to ACMachine. I really wanted the AC3 track for Brotherhood Of The Wolf because it makes such nice use of the surrounds, but because the movie is long and noisy and edge enhanced, I figured the AC3 track was too large, and would result in much lower quality video. But I gave ACMachine a try, transcoded down to 256, saved a bunch of space, and the DD5.1 sounds just great, and the video is OK also. So, many thanks to you and DSPGuru.

So, to your question. About all I can come up with is to create shortcuts for the .dlls you use, and replace the ones in GKnot with your shortcuts. In the case of the MPEG2DEC3.dll shortcut, you'd rename it to mpeg2dec.dll in the GKnot folder. I don't know how that method will affect the encoding time, if at all (or if GKnot-VDub will choke on it). In the case of .dlls that GKnot doesn't support (Convolution3D for example), renaming to a GKnot .dll you don't use such as InverseTelecine, should also work. And if it's a lame idea, then just forget I ever said anything.:)

While I was thinking and writing, WEF answered. I put time in this already, so I'll throw it out for the wolves anyway.:scared:

Hi manono,

Thx for the kind words but all I did was simply post the success I had with using it on a few movies. It certainly does save a lot of space with minimal quality loss. Glad to hear you had success. BTW- Brotherhood of the Wolf, great flick indeed. Can't wait to get my hands on the R1 version, will be nice if it's in DTS.

*grinning* I can't believe I didn't think of this in the first place. I use to do that sort of thing all the time on my Macintosh. I'll give it a shot and thx for raising the idea.

Hi again-

So maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all?

Brotherhood Of The Wolf (Pacte Des Loupes)- There are 2 R1 versions so far. The R1 American has only DD5.1-384, but better video and only 1 DVD (we get short changed on the extras). The R1 Canadian has 3 discs, is loaded with extras, has the DTS track, has poorer video, and costs more. So, I went with the American version.

So, is it possible to change the .avs defaults yet? Like MaTTer, I would like to change the default setting, like Telecide (to "order=1,guide=0,post=2")

Looked through the registry, ini files, etc. Found nothing, except this thread.

So, yes/no?

EDIT: Maybe an idea would be to observe the template files (.avst) present in VDubMod?

Hi-

Boy, that was an old thread you dug up. :)

Post=2 is default, so you don't have to do anything about that. As for Guide=1, as you know, it's a good idea to have if you're working with standard telecined material. I don't believe it's possible to change that without editing the .avs every time. But I believe it will be possible to change the default settings when GKnot 29.0 is released. You can find more information in This Thread. (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62656)

Thanks for the idea :). I didn't know it was possible to transcode an AC3 track to a lower bitrate. The result will still be SPDIF compatible, right? I'll try it on a few movies on my disk that are already around for ages, because I couldn't make up my mind.

Hi piscator-

Yes, at the time I was using the SPDIF out from my Philips Acoustic Edge soundcard to my receiver. It worked fine. My ears aren't even good enough to tell the difference between the original and the transcoded AC3. Plenty of people can, though, I guess. These days you can do the same thing with BeSweet and its GUI, I think.

Post=2 is default?

Man...I followed the dev of 5.xx pretty closely, and I totally missed that. Thanks for the heads-up.

And while you are correct on guide=1 being a generally good idea, I leave it off because I do....ANIME!...which is well known for having stupid edits and silly pattern cadence. So guide staying off leads to better matching in many cases I've encountered (though that lessened as 5.xx matured) and I just turn it off on general principle now.

version 29.0? Is that a typo, or sarcasm? ;)

Also, thanks for linking that thread. Dunno why that didn't turn up in my search results. Looks like good stuff there.

Hi-

Post=2 is default?

Yeah, from the Decomb Reference Manual Version 5.1.0:
post (0-5, default 2)
version 29.0? Is that a typo, or sarcasm?

Hehe. Sorry. GKnot 0.29.0.

Heh. That would be why I didn't know. Last one I downloaded myself was 5.0...
