Somebody I tried to help out wrote me this, quote;
"This baby plays fine on my DVD player, but every ripper I've
tried reports a data error for ONE file, the first file. I believe this is some new copy protection whizz bang, which allegedly can be defeated with a black felt marker. I allegedly can make a small mark on the outer edge of the DVD, making the track invisible to the laser. That is the track, again allegedly, that a PC DVD reader sees and reports as bad. If it can't see it, it is supposed to be good."

I'm sure he can't be right, last time I used a black felt marker was on a dodgy audio cd back in 1998. If this is true then I'm rather stunned and miffed.....
Anybody, please help.

There is something like that regarding "protected" audio CDs which I think you couldn't play in your computer normally. If you used a pen of some kind and made a mark at the right place it apparantely would trick the computer and the CD would play fine. I have no idea if it really worked...

But I haven't heard anything like this about DVDs and I kinda doubt it's really the case.


More likely he hasn't unlocked the DVD with a software DVD-player before trying to open them with whatever decrypter he's using or something like that.

Exactly.

@all

I was just informed that the DVD won't unlock on his PC, whilst with other DVD's (100's of them) there is no problem and this particular one plays fine on his Sony stand-alone player.
Are we looking at a million possibilities why this one won't work or is there a clear answer to it?

Try ripping the disc with DVD Decrypter.
Tell me about any errors it throws up (if any).

Congrats again! You're latest version solved the problem. It actually
kept giving error messages because of the first VOB and then whilst playing it on the DVD drive, skipped the first VOB as well. It didn't do that on a stand-alone player. All Decrypters incl Smartripper, VStrip (even direct) and your earliers versions kept giving these error messages untill we tried your latest version which probably
is clever enough to see it had no business with the first VOB anyway.
