Watching XviD encoded movies, how???

i have an XviD encoded movie that i want to watch but it wont play.

i installed Nic's Binary, WMP and divx player refuse to play them.
WMP tries to dl the codec, divx player gives me an error msg saying that it failed to open it.

i then installed Koepi's Binary + StatsReader, and got the same result.
What am i missing here?
it says nothing it the sticky threads about playing the movies, only encoding them.

the closest thing i found in the Q&A was this:

As XviD is creating MPEG4-compliant video streams, you can play your movies encoded today with any MPEG4-compliant decoder (i.e. any future version of XviD, or other MPEG4 players). XviD will, however, incorporate new features in the future such as B-frames, which cannot be played with the current build of either XviD or DivX.

what i get from that is that xvid is a codec for encoding NOT for playing the result of that encode

and i didnt find anything while searching in the forum.

so can someone please tell me how to play them.

I'm not surprised that DivX-Player won't play them, that seems to be an unstable piece of software. As for WMP, at least one other user reported a problem (gldblade). Could you try BSPlayer also?

If it doesn't work, what Windows-version do you have on your PC?

No way, no way! You cannot watch XviD encoded movies, only you can have the pleasure of encoding them! ;)

Just kidding of course :). You can try to reinstall your XviD binary, try ffdshow filter as well, and also try ZoomPlayer or mpc as alternatives to BSPlayer, which was mentioned by Teegedeck.

ok, i istalled bsplay085.488, uppgraded it to 085.490 and i could play it, BUT it was all green with no sound.

My OS is win2k SP3

BSPlayer (dunno why but) has always caused problems for me too. Try ZoomPlayer or mpc please.

i installed Zoom Player v2.80 and now i got picture, but no sound

and now i got sound, i forgot to register mpgaudio.ax

You might be missing some audio filters and you can download them from Doom9's "download -> filters" section. What audio format does your XviD file contain, do you know? If it is ac3 you need Audiofilters in Doom9's "download -> filters" section (unzip the files in the package to a separate directory and double-click the file named -> registerfilters-2k.cmd). If it contains ogg audio (if it's an OGM file, which I think is not the case), you will need OggDS and SubTitDS filters.

Hmmm...This does interest me though. I almost wonder if it was a real XviD movie? And if it was, how old was it? etc.

If anybody has any other troubles like this please post them here. And if anybody has any old encoding movies lying around on there harddrives & find they don't decode as well please post that too.

I found an old one.It is unbreakable.All I get now is pixels.Interesting thing that a movie encoded before it and a movie after it,play fine...

i've never had any problems with bsplayer but i would suggest looking also at your video card drivers, too

for me, when i upgraded to the detonator 40s, nvidia changed the overlay handling and i needed to change the overlay mode from 2 to 1 (or something like that) in bsplayer to get video again

Hey nic.I looked at the date when the movie was burned to a cd.It was 11th/april 2002.I installed koepis build 06042002-1 and now it plays fine.Yes I have almost all builds made by you and koepi since I started to use XviD...:D

Huh. Looks like an old buggy interlaced clip. I'm guessing that you have a version of ffdshow which is actually playing the file in zoomplayer and decoding it incorrectly, seeing as it's decoding fine in VirtualDub (which uses vfw, and XviD's dshow frontend just calls the vfw dll, thus zoomplayer isn't using XviD's dshow frontend to decode).

In your ffdshow preferences, find the "workaround bugs" option in one of the tabs and try changing the option to the "old XviD interlacing bug" choice.

Or I might be wrong and this is a new kettle of fish.
