This is a DivX5 question but I'm posting here because my problem appears to have something to do with GKnot.
I've been using DivX5 (just the basic version - not DivX5 Pro) for about three weeks on my new computer with XP Pro (since September 27 to be exact). A couple of days ago I installed GKnot (current version) and have been getting the hang of it. Today, however, if I try to encode anything I get a message saying the 30-day evaluation period has expired and that I have to now register at yourproduct.com; the message also refers to the file DivX.dll in the Windows System directory.

I can't even play any files that use the DivX5 codec - the same message appears.

Has GKnot upgraded my DivX5 to DivX5 Pro? And why would I get this if it's been installed a lot less than 30 days? Or is this perhaps some kind of virus? And if you do need to register, whereabouts at yourproduct.com is the registration page?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi-

Well, it has nothing to do with GKnot. I checked with Acaila (DivX5 Mod), and we both agree that it doesn't have anything to do directly with DivX5 either. So, I think it's just a coincidence that it appeared right after installing GKnot. My guess is that you downloaded or installed something else at about the same time that did it to you.

So-do you have current virus protection? As you know, if you don't, you should. Assuming that your virus protection didn't catch it, I'd suggest you install Ad-aware from Lavasoft (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) and see if it can spot and remove it. Then I guess you'll have to uninstall GKnot (go to the Options Tab and "Delete Registry Keys" first), and then delete the GKnot folder, uninstall anything DivX related (including going into the registry and searching around), and then reinstall GKnot (but without DivX4) and finally reinstall DivX5. Sorry you're having problems-good luck.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. I've run an up-to-date virus checker and found nothing suspicious. AdAware picked up a couple of suspect cookies that I have removed.

Curiously, the message stopped appearing about a half an hour after my post yesterday - media files started playing as normal again - and it hasn't reappeared today.

If that was an ad-related strategy it has to be the worst I've ever heard of.

I have had a few problems with GKnot crashing during encoding so I think I will continue with a full re-install as well.

Thanks again
