Please help......is this possible??

Ok Im at work on a locked down Win 2000 machine that has a dvd player, but no software installed. And I cant install any software :(

Is there any dvd player out there that doesnt require an install? One that I can just unzip into a DIR and run it? Im stuck here at work bored as hell with these dvds staring me in the face. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

Well I know that Bs Player can play DivX 5.02 files if the codec's are in the same Dir as the Player. Maybe if you can get some of the MPEG2 codecs, then you might be able to decode your DVD's. Im not 100% sure about this. Someone else might know though.

Just tried BS player, it works because it doesnt need an intall...BUT it wont play a DVD :(

It says "Unknown File Format ()"

Basically all I need is a DVD encoder, is there some codecs or soemthing I can get?? Please help...

The (free, open source) VideoLAN Client will do this for you. It's available in a .zip file and can be run from any directory, without touching anything else.

Almost works, but freezed when trying to play a dvd. I tried loading a vob file and it worked, but only one of them would work and that was the intro video...

mmm i think the real problem isnt how to decode mpeg2 (you can use Elecard codec for example), the real problem is how to read dvd information. You CAN´T read it without a DVD-Player because of the CSS protection system. Maybe you can try to RIP the DVD with SMatrRipper and try to open the VOBs with bsplayer+elecard codec or with the program -h gives to you...

I think the REAL problem is the admins! Is it just win 2000 stoping you or some Remote Admin software? if so Name?

No we use Novell as well as Win2000.

You just said it yourself, you can't read it without a DVD-Player because of the CSS protection system. SmartRipper depends on the files of an installled DVD-Player. I proved that a little while ago when I installed XP and tried to RIP a DVD without a DVD-Player. Smart Ripper said it required a few DLL's, and asked if it should look them up in the PowerDVD folder. So that was my clue to install PowerDVD and that solved all my problems.

I tried the latest version of VideoLAN Client from http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.4.5/win32/vlc-0.4.5-win32.exe and it worked fine playing a DVD for me. The version I linked to earlier was an older version.

Well Im friends with one of the admins and he let me install the freedvd.zip which are codecs supposedly to allow win media player to play dvds. Media player wouldnt play dvds still so we tried Video Lan once again. And it PLAYED! BUT it played for 1 minute and then froze. Why could this be happening, the admin friend said it might be because DMA is disabled on the DVD drives? What do you guys think...here are the basic specs of the computer:

P4 1.8ghz
256mb ram
20gb hdd
16mb vid card

Does it freeze in the same place every time? have you tried another dvd? Another computer?

Well thanks for your help guys, after installing those codecs and enabling DMA mode on the drives it plays fine! YEA now i can watch dvds at work :devil:
