Hi all I've been backing up various movies now for about a week now and have read hours upon hours of posts in about 3 forums plus thins one.

My question is that in movies like Spy Kids and The mask of Zorro and Miss congeniality. THe movies are well under 2 hours but yet the file sizes after I strip everything I know how to in IFO edit are still over 5gig. I do not understand why this is. I thought that 120 minutes of dvd video would be able to fit onto a 4.7 gig dvd. And if these are well under 120 minutes where does all the extra data come from and how do I get rid of it.

Believe me I hope that this has not been covered before or even sound like an extreme newbie question but this item completely eludes me and I would greatly appreciate it if sombody could shed some light on this.

THanks in advance

Yes, it's a newbie question but we don't mind. Afterall, we're all here to help each other learn. That being said, however, I suggest you do some more searches on the forums and do a bit more reading. The size all has to do with the bitrate, number of streams, etc.

I'm surprised that you've been doing authoring work without having this fundamental understanding of the basics. I don't mean this to sound rude but perhaps the guides have just made things "too easy". I spent about 4 or 5 days (straight since I was not working at the time) just reading things here before I ever even attempted to do one. That probably equates to about 2-4 weeks worth of reading if you're a busy person and don't have hours to sit at the computer all the time.

I urge you to read as much as you can on the basics of DVD technology so that you have a better foundation on which to base your future endeavors. It makes it a lot easier to understand what it is you're really doing at any given step. Read all you can about bitrates (both video and audio), what DVD-9 and DVD-5 are, the difference between 4.7GB and 4,700,000,000 bytes, and read about bitrate budgets and bitrate calculators. The information is all here. It just takes a lot of searching and a lot of reading.

THanks for the input, I knew all along you could change the quality of the movie and make it fit but never tried it yet. I just thought that 2hrs of dvd video was 4.7 gig on all dvd's. I understand now that I was wrong so now I'm gonna be looking into what you said. Just out of curiosity could you point me in the right direction with a link or something. I read slightly through the rempeg guide and think that is where I should be reading. But I use dvd decryptor, IFO edit. to make my stuff is there a a method to do this with those 2 utlitlies. I read a little about IFO edit being able to do this but they were referring to a dvd to cd conversion adn that is not what I was looking for.

Just a little link would be greatly appreciated.

THanks Again.
