slight shake or choppyness

I have tried 3 diff dvd's all around 5.5gig, and converted them down using all the guides, and 5-6 different combinations, tried both cce, and tmpeg, but still get same result. (on dvd player)When someone moves across the screen, or just a regular pan across a room, i get slight shake or choppyness, its not smooth. To a non-picky person, its probably not noticable, but its definatly there. Ive wasted 12-14 reencodes, and still nothing, if someone has a suggestion, that would be great.

I've noticed that my ps2 has this effect, but none of my other players do. It also does it on "retail" dvds

Don't know the specifics of your encodes. But this very problem often occurs when you encode a movie at 29.97fps when the original is a FILM source. On these kinds of sources (it applies to most movies) it is better to do an inverse telecine, encode at 23.976fps with 2:3 pulldown set (for example using PULLDOWN).

well, i looked at the source, once more after you mentioned that, and the source in DVD2avi that it was video type=NTSC and and frame type=100% interlaced through movie. taking a quote from doom9.org dvd2avi tutorial "Otherwise you will have to perform IVTC, the same also applies if the Video Type is NTSC." i looked around for more detail, but was unable to find it. any thought on settings? should i force to 23, frame type...etc

I just tried dvd2avi, Field operation=NONE, then loaded vfapi, made avi, brought into CCE 2.64. ran it without progressive frames checked, and still ran into same thing. =(

if its an interlaced source, you are going to have to either not use CCE, or make sure you get the right field order setting in CCE, which means doing a little bit of research of which way it goes, cause i cant remember ;)

your right, i forgot to check the upper/bottom, and when i reencoded with bottom first...everything is happy. Thanks for your help. I had a 100% interlaced source, NTSC type. I left field operation=none, and sent it through DVD2AVI. Made avi with vfapi, and chose that into CCE 2.64. Single pass VBR, with progressive frames not checked, upper field not checked, and voila. perfect. No more slight shakingness.

I have experienced this exact problem with REMPEG2. It seems to be only some DVD players, not all that play jerky, and the jerkyness varies in frequency.

I have found this on Stargate and Moulin Rouge (the only ones I have done so far). REMPEG does not give you all the fancy options as TMPGEnc etc does, so maybe it's not a good program to use for this reason.

Which program does the clever money use? I find TMPGEnc to be a very time consuming method, first running DVD2AVI to frame server and then forcing the I frames takes nearly a day by itself. And then the encoding can take 2 days or more.

I may point out that I have only tried PAL, 25fps movies so far.

This same problem has been driving me nuts. I was trying to transcode the Simpson's DVD. It shows it as Film, although it does flicker to NTSC. The big thing to make sure you set Bottom/Lower Field first. I did some reading and found that NTSC 720x480 should always be lower field first. Upper Field is used to encode PAL. I tend to agree with this as Bitrate Viewer shows the Top Field = Yes and if I use this setting the video stutters alot.

So far I found that what you mentioned is the only way CCE can hadle an Interlaced video. No field options in DVD2AVI, Uncheck Upper Field and Preogessive before encoding.

I have read in the Doom 9 guide that GOP M should be = 4, although the CCE guide says always use 5. Does anyone know what is the best setting and what the real difference is between using the two.

Also, does anyone know when you would use the Progressive flag in CCE? I assume it is correct to use when your source is true Fillm. Not sure if I trust the output from Bitrate Viewer anymore.

I am having similar problems with "The Insider" a FILM 99% movie and Progresive frames (output from DVD2AVI). Action scenes are shown jerky and flickering. I used the following settings in CCE Basic:

- Progressive frames
- Offset Line = 1 (From CCE tech support: 0 or even number is for Top Field source first, 1 or odd number for Bottom Field source first)
- Block scan: Zigzag
- GOP N/M=4
- 2 pass VBR (2000/4000/9000)

The DVD2AVI video setting is FIELD OPERATION=NONE.
Any advice?
