5.1 @128kbit ?!?

i've read on the microsoft homepage that the new windows media 9 format will support audio files with 5.1 sound @ 128 kbit! does anybody know if the quality is any good, or if there are any other programs, preferably not by microsoft that support 5.1 @ 128 kbit??

The wm9 format does support 6channel at 128kbit, but I can tell you for most things you will not like the quality.
I did a movie (think it was Changing Lanes) and the quality was a bit low, 192k for the same movie sounded just fine though. On the other hand, I did an episode of Star Trek: TOS (mostly dialog) and the 128k 6ch audio was perfect.
So, as with everything, it is going to depend on how complex the source is.

do you know any alternative to wm9, just because i'd prefer to use something not brandmarked that much by microsoft!

what is your experience with wm9?? is the beta worth downloading and installing or should i rather wait for a final release?

are there any conflicts with other multimedia products? or what about the DRM does it let you still playback your divx files in wmp?

Vorbis.. (still dosent work too well though, no Channel Coupling :( ) ACC also works great if you can spare the extra bits.

i've tried AAC now but found out that it is (almost) impossible to mux it with avi files... so it has basically no use for me!

does anybody know about vorbis??
is it possible to mux 5.1 vorbis with an avi?

i'm generally making 2 CD rips so a bigger auio file shouldn't be too much of a problem!

if you are making 2 cd rips why not use AC3? if AC3 is a problem you may wish to use the OGG container instead of AVI and put in a 5.1 vorbis stream... yet still not the best option. Good luck.
