View Full Version : Bit rate to high?

I posted this message in the basic area but know one was able to answer so I am posting here.

I am having a problem with a choppy picture when I play my backed up DVD's on my stanalone player. From reading it seem that my bitrate is two hi so I used a bitrate viewer to determine my max bitrate.

Using CCE & DVD2SVCD with the default settings I encoded a movie, which resulted in a max bitrate of 3159 and an average bitrate of 1946.

I re-did the movie by with the following settings:
MIN: 600
MAX: 2500
MAX AVE: 1600.

With these setting the peak bit rate was 3083 and the ave was 1882.

How can I limit the max bitrate as the setting in the encoding tab don't seem to work?

Thanks.

Here is the log.

This definately belongs in the basic area. All problems belong here. There are actually fewer people that read the advanced forum.

It is known that CCE and TMPG do not always stay withing the bitrate boundaries set.
Some people also feel that Bitrate viewer isn't always accurate either. I have no opinion my self on that one.
First make sure there are no known problems with your player by checking the DVD list at www.vcdhelp.com

After that continue to drop your max bitrate until it works for you.

I would suggest doing a few test chapters at 2000 MAX on a CDRW disc and if that works continue to raise it 100 points until it starts to fail. Make sure the test chapters include areas you are having problems with.

On a related note, I tried the bitrate settings that you use Mark and got a warning screen. Are you able to replay those high bitrate encodes on a standalone dvd player?

Every DVD player is different and each plays at it's own level. The warning means you are going outside the SVCD standard and can be shut off by simply unchecking the warn check box on the bitrate tab.

My Apex player is somewhat unique in that it will play incredibly high bitrates. Check your player at www.vcdhelp.com and see what others have found it capable of playing.
My Pioneer won't go much above 2500.

Don't go by my settings as you must encode for your player, not what others are doing on their players, unless they have the exact same player of course.

Best way I found to find the upper limit of a player is to encode a chapter using CBR and a CDRW at various bitrates, keeping the audio at the highest you ever plan to use(usually 224) and see where you start getting problems. CBR will insure that the bitrate is at it's highest all the time. Listen for problems in the audio. This is where you tend to find problems first, but not always.

Markrb and i both have the same dvd player its the apex 5131 and its able to play very hight bitrates outside the svcd specs as mark stated tho not all dvd players are able to do this and checking vcdhelp or doing chapter tests is something i would do in finding the solution.
