for svcds that are created by tmpgenc, doom9's guide instructs to demux the mpeg2 file with tmpgenc and then remux using bbmpeg. should these instructions also be followed for vcds that are created by tmpgenc?

Well in my opinion it wouldn't hurt but probably isn't necessary. TMPGEnc does a decent job with mpeg1 multiplexing its just mpeg2 multiplexing that causes problems on some dvd players.

adam,
thanks for the reply.
could a bad muxed mpeg2 file cause "blocks" during playback on a stand-alone dvd player? the stand-alone dvd player in question is a apex-1500.

It depends on what you mean by blocks. If you just mean the typical macroblocks than I doubt this has anything do with multiplexing, it is just a result of a lack of bitrate in that scene. Even with 2500kbits some scenes just won't look perfect. The test would be to play it on your pc, as it has no compliancy restrictions. If the blocks are still there than you may need to increase your bitrate or attempt to use some filtering.
If however these blocks are severe distortions like green blocks than its possible that mux rate could be off, but unlikely. Usually an incorrectly multiplexed SVCD/DVD just leads to sync problems. To be safe I would always use bbmpeg to multiplex SVCDS.

adam,
sorry about that. i should have specified the blocks i mentioned were the "green blocks".
i guess my next step is to test a svcd that i remux with bbmpeg.
thanks again for the info.
