Hi...
if you have a poorly encoded DVD with Macroblocks in the vobs, does it help increasing the filesize if you use a noise filter?
has anyone tried that yet or can answer that question?
thanks in advance...

Hi-
Ordinarily, to reduce noise, you'd use Temporal Filters such as TemporalSoften. But they won't do anything for macroblocks except perhaps make them worse. So, you'd use a Spatial Filter of some sort. However, they work by blurring, so unless it's an anime, I'd be very careful about the settings. I'd say that if the DVD has macroblocks already, that you're going to be pretty much stuck with them. You might try a BilinearResize and see if that improves the situation without blurring too much.

If you look over in the Avisynth forum under the MPEG2DEC PP thread, you can download a version of mpeg2dec3.dll that accepts CPU=(0-6), which will perform deblocking and/or deringing on the VOB stream before encoding. It should take care of those macroblocks nicely, without hurting the detail as much as heavy filtering.
