View Full Version : Weird problem, media perhaps?

I just bought a bundle of the new White Lable Gen4 2x DVD-R discs and as yet I've not bee successful in getting one to work properly in a standalone.
The discs initially work no problem, but as move further in to the movie/disc it completely freezes the picture and hangs the machine. I've written the same movie on one of these discs then to a standard 1x white label and it works fine.
I've noticed that after writing there is a difference in how the disc comes to an end. The one that works goes straight from data to lead out, the one that doesn't seems to fade gradually before the data area ends.
Does this make any sense to anyone?, it's the only reason I can see for the disc not to work as I've written over 200 DVD's now and never had problems like this at all.
One more thing this was this case prior to and after the latest firmware upgrade on my Pioneer DVRA04 to 1.32 for the high speed media.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this problem.

One more thing I have scanned one of each disc if anyone has a problem understanding my description and would like to see what I mean, there is clearly a difference in the way these disc have been written by the drive.

This is a normal crap media problem. Use better media.

So am I to understand that the White Label Gen4 2x, is crap media despite their Gen3 being one of the best in my opinion.
What 2x would you recommend?, I have been using Choice 2x without many problems.
Is that a common prob with the dye fading at outer edge when writing?

Verbatim, Pioneer, TDK, Maxell should be fine. I haven't read / heard much about Taiyo Yuden DVDs, but if their DVD media is only half as good as their CDs, then you can use them as well.
I once had a Vivastar disc where the burner has switched the laser off before the end...without giving an error message! Speed was 1x. The disc was not even recognised by the burner it self, nor by my toshiba dvd-rom (which can read crap dvd-r discs)

It sounds like you are experiencing media issues. Most common issue with defective media is that the outer edges or last 15 minutes of the disc, have problems. Skipping, pixelation, and burning issues. These kind of media issues are not exclusive to 'cheap' media. The non-named media is more likely to have the problems. As to a 2x brand recommendation, I can't help. I use Ritek G3's or PrimeDisc, both of which I burn at 1x.
What I would recommend would be to use ADVDinfo to see if you can find out the true manufacturer of the discs you are having problems with (then, obviously, avoid that brand). Also, you can post what it tells you, so others can avoid them.
Verbatum, Pioneer and some other higher priced 2x media should work for you, and I'm sure there is other less expensive 2x media (maybe TDK).

Pioneer fw v1.32
is well known for its limitations in burning to cheaper media.
pioneer don't want you to use cheap media!
They want you to use media that costs 4 pounds a go so they
can get their cut of the money.
There was never any valid reason to upgrade to this FW.
why on earth did you upgrade your firmware??????
ps
white label is a subsiduary of Datasafe
and almost all their products seem to be
made by TDK. Hardly a second rate company.
I only use datasafe/whitelabel in my
pioneer dvr 104 fw 1.20 as the results have
been so good.
datasafe/white label dvd-rw 89p.....TDK
datasafe classic silver (2x)/white label 2x 70p.....TDKG02
you can't beat them!!!!!!

Just bought a batch of TDK and Verbatim DVD-R to name a few so far I've only written 1 of each TDK and Verbatim discs both of which have the faded data area at the outer edge after writing at 2x
This is beginning to turn out to be a real pain in the neck, I've tried god knows how many different manufacturers of DVD-R they all either end up with the faded data area or freeze half way through or every couple of mins then just stop all together, I don't have any of this bother writing to any DVD+R even the cheapest of cheap at £1.20 a go work like a dream.
My trusted WhiteLabel 1x never lets me down, only had about 2 out of around 200 fail but due to scratches.
Anyone else experienced this faded area problem regularly?

Not sure if i should be posting here - this is an odd one - burn a dvd-r no problems - but - if i try and read the disc on anything other than the A03 that it was burnt in......using primo as the burning software, on the latest firmware (to see if that was the problem), and tried god knows how many different brands of discs......
Anyone.......
