Hi there all I need some advice here. I have a media problem. I've been burning DVD's with Verbatim DVD+RW's and Philips DVD+RW and DVD+R DVD's. I have a Philips DVDRW228 model drive. It works flawlessly with the Verbatim and the Philips DVD's. I just bought a whole bunch of Ritek DVD+R's because some people on this forum highly recommended them, but not one will work. I know that it is not the technique because I will burn one to the Verbatim and then one to the RItek and the Verbatim will work fine on all three of my standalone players but the Ritek will not work on any. I also have had no luck with Memorex DVD+R's. Can someone please tell me of a brand of DVD+R's that is still inexpensinve but they are not having compatibility issues. Oh by the way the Ritek burned DVD's will work on the PC fine.
Thanks Wade

I've had good luck with the Memorex DVD+R on my Sony 120A
My only problem is finding a list of Burners or utilities that set the compatibility bit to DVD-ROM. Bitsetter does not work with Sony drives.

Hi there what do you mean set the compatibility bit to DVD-ROM? I've been using DVD Decryptor to do my burning. If there is a trick please let me know.
THanks Wade

DVD+RW format allows to set the media descriptor to dvd-rom.
Some players are physically capable of reading dvd+rw, but refuse such discs for an unknown media descriptor. In this case, setting it to dvd-rom helps.
However, other players refuse dvd+rw only of the media descriptor is dvd-rom (because they "know" dvd+rw, but don't like invalid media descriptors).

That's a weird thing. Does this issue only affect DVD+RW? Isn't DVD+R affected?

Lets say: it makes sense to me for DVD+RW, but not for DVD+R. This does not mean that it does not exist, but I could not explain it for DVD+R...

See the DVDBitsetter description on the www.dvdplusrw.org Web site for a description. In fact DVD+R is the one I am especially focused on since the media is cheaper and thus more desirable to work on (older) DVD players

Well, most of this page is complete FUD, but I'll have a look at it...ok, they indeed say that it works for dvd+r. But I still doesn't make sense to me  I wonder how to set or reset such a media descriptor on a non-rewriteable disc...maybe you can only do it once on dvd+r discs.
@Suade: You can't use cheap discs, as you saw, and only few manufacturers make dvd+discs. If you want to save money, then sell your burner and use dvd-r(w).

Read the www.dvdplusrw.org document (link from the main page). Yes you can only do it on unfinalized DVD+R. And the fact that players look for certain compatibility information is not that mysterious, but it is a pain.

Unfortunately for me the disks that I bought were purchased out of recommendations in this forum from other users. I read a # of posts that claimed Ritek DVD's to work excellent. So far no luck here though.

You mix up Ritek DVD-R and Ritek DVD+R. I can't remember many posts about Ritek DVD+R at all...

Hi all I just got it to work. Your right about the Ritek mix up, but I did just get them to work. And I have just tested the Ritek burnt DVD's on a bunch of players with great success. THey actually do work but my problem was related to DVD Decryptor not finalizing my DVD+R DVD's. I think it's a bug because I'm not the only one with this problem. The work around I used was to finalize it in nero by burning a bogus file to the DVD and selecting Finalize so no futher writing is possible.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm happy now that I didn't waste $60.00

I'd appreciate a little more information on your process with Nero.
Assuming I have written a DVD+R with DVD Decrypter and it no longer is readable by Windows explorer or anything I could find, then what did you do??? Did you insert the disk and use it with Nero? What was the procedure. If I can save some disks I'd like to.
Thanks,

If windows doesn't recognize the dvd then I think your out of luck. But try it anyway. I just had a problem burning these a the max setting so I've determined that you have to burn it at a 1x speed for the Ritek media or it will be unreadable sometimes.
Here is the Nero method step by step.
1. Open Nero burning rom 5.5.9.x, put DVD+R media in tray and close it, go to recorder, medium info ... If it shows "the medium is empty" press ok and goto the following step.
2.File,new,select DVD-rom iso,
now go create a blank notepad file and call it something you'll remember.
drag and drop this new file into your compliation.
3. file write cd.. Select write and finalize DVD(no further writing possible)
in a few seconds you will have a closed disc.
Congrats.
Try this it works or me

Tried it. It worked fine -- thanks!
Also had to set "New Multisession" check box to get the Write and finalize option.
But now my DVD is saved. Thanks again.

Why do you think the the dvdplusrw.org info is FUD? I know
I can't read any DVD+RW media on my panasonic sr-8175
(thinkpad laptop oem drive), and it seems to be due to dvd+r
compatibility. According to vcdhelp.com, this player
requires the compatibility mode setting.
There seems to be no ability to control this compatibility
setting for the new sony dru500a, even tho sony markets this
drive for its compatibility.
Sure wish I knew how to workaround this. I even tried newer
firmware for the sr-8175 - no luck.
