View Full Version : Applying Audio FadeIn FadeOut to SVCD

I have converted LOTR onto 3 CDRs using DVD2SVCD.
I wish to apply an audio fade out at the end of each
CD so that it does not cut off so abruptly. Also a fade in
would be nice at the beginning of a CD. Is there anyway to
edit the DVD2SVCD files so that TMPGenc would do a fade in/out?
I tried demuxing the completed Mpeg2, then putting the audio MP2
file through TMPGenc with fade in and fade out. Works great, but then
when the files are remuxed, both VCDEasy and Nero cannot burn them, saying
that they are too large to fit onto an 800min CD ??? In actual fact,
the remuxed files seem to be slightly smaller in Mb size, yet neither
burner program can now use them?????
Thanks in advance....

hi! finally someone else who enjoys a nice fading transition. DSPGuru has implemented a Fadein plugin for BeSweet, unfortunately there is no fadeout plugin yet, but the sourcecode for fadein in available so maybe someone can work out it's counterpart.
But still this does not completely address your problem. This will allow you to fade the audio while encoding, which will be fine for the first CD, but I'm afraid it will be much harder if you want it on each CD. The basic idea is that you must find out the timestamps for the start and end of your second and 3rd CD's and create the audio(BeSweet -split) for those CD's on their own, then mux. Not sure why you're having a muxing problem though, have you actually tried burning them with VCDEasy, because sometimes it will show up too large in the info window, but still burn ok.
Note: putting the audio through TMPEG's faders will seriously degrade the quality(unless I am mistaken and it somehow does this without reencoding).
The other option is you can do the same method I described above, but use a wave editor to do the cutting/fading, this will give you greater control over the fading and allow you do fade out as well, but you then have to deal with these huge wave files.
let us know how it goes, good luck.

You could try demuxing and then using Sound Forge to apply a fade in and out. Then re-mux.
As far as Nero goes, can you enable the overburn option and then make sure you are in disk at once mode and then try burning it?

Thanks Pacohaas and Mac Sidewinder for your replies.
The problem seems to be in the demuxing and remuxing with TMPGenc.
Example: Using DVD2SVCD I have ripped Pearl Harbour onto 3 x 800m CDRs.
The whole movie in its three parts plays perfectly on my set top DVD player.
But, as mentioned in my early post, the beginning and ends cut off abruplty
and it would be so nice to add a simple audio fade in and fade out.
I have tried several ways, by demuxing and putting the audio mp2 through
TMPGenc with stream type = ES Audio Only and applying a fadein fadeout.
This whole process takes only 5 minutes, and I don't notice any degradation
of the sound. I've also tried loading the mp2 into GoldWave and applying
fadein fadeout, saving it as a wav file, then encoding back to mp2 from wav
with BeSweet (toolame). Either way works after remuxing with TMPGenc and I
can play the resultant MPEG2 file on my computer, complete with video and
audio containing the fades.............BUT
as soon as I try to burn this MPEG2 file to CDR using either Nero or VCDEeasy,
they both report the file as being much too big to fit on an 800m CDR even
with overburning !!!!!!
The problem is in the Demux Remux. Try this yourself......
1) Copy an Mpeg2 file (created with DVD2SVCD) onto your HD.
2) Demux with TMPGenc (Mpeg Tools).
3) Remux with TMPGenc (Don't worry about audio fade).
4) Try to burn the remuxed MPEG2 to CDR...It just doesn't
work, even though the remuxed file is actually smaller in size
than the original !!!!!!! WHY ???
Is the problem with TMPGenc's mux and demux?? If so, what other
programs can do both demux and remuxing??
Thanks for your time in reading this. Hope we can find some answers.

I sometimes normalize to silent streams. I demux with TMPGEnc and normalize with TMPGEnc. But I didn't use TMPGEnc to remux, I use bbMPEG for this step. After remuxing I made a bin/cue with VCDImager (TSCV) and burn with CDRWin. I never come into any trouble.

tiffany you are using the svcd template in nero right, not just dragging your mpeg over to the window for a normal iso cd?
edit, also try using vcdeasy to burn your mpg files

Success at last !!! The main problem was that I was Demuxing with TMPGenc, applying audio Fade In and Fade Out then Remuxing with TMPGenc, but ending up with Mpeg2 files far too large to burn to CDR (even though the orginal file before Demuxing would burn to CDR OK).
Labersack (in post above) advises to Demux with TMPGenc but Remux with bbMpeg, yet this was a dead-end road as I could not get bbMpeg to work correctly. Every time I would Click on one of the boxes, the program would disappear. But I got bbMpeg to work OK in Windows 98 and was able to Remux Video and Fade-out Audio and burn to a CDR. (I later read a post from "Frank" advising me of this link....www.divx-digest.com which allows the use of bbMpeg in Win XP). The end result was well worth the effort, as I can now rip DVDs and produce 80min CDRs with a nice audio Fade-In and Fade-Out effect rather than the abrupt cut-off at the end of the CDR. Here's how.........
1) I set up DVD2SVCD to rip the required number of Chapters (not the whole DVD movie). Just keep ticking the chapters until the time reaches around 48 to 50 minutes, giving a bitrate close to 2000 which is good. Let's say Chapters 1 to 9 make up 50 minutes. I will then load the DVD into my settop DVD player and look at the transition between Chapters 9 and 10, looking for a reasonable "scene change". If it's not suitable, I'll go down or up one Chapter. Disable "make CD Images" as they will not be required. When DVD2SVCD has finished the 9 Chapters (usually around 4 hours), it will create a file called bbMpeg_muxed_file00.mpg in the MUXED folder.
2) Using TMPGenc Mpeg Tools, Simple Demux the bbMpeg_muxed_file00.mpg into Video and Audio and into a different folder.
3) Load the audio .Mp2 part into a Wave Editor (I use GoldWave) and apply Fade-In, Fade-Out and whatever else you want (Eg You can increase the overall volume on quiet DVDs).
4) Save the end result into the folder (step 2) as a WAV file.
5) Exit GoldWave and load the Wav file into TMPGenc and convert back to MP2 using the ToolLame plugin for TMPGenc. This step is important and is explained clearly and simply in the Guide "Foolproof AVI,DivX to SVCD using CCE" Steps 13 and 14. Do a search for this guide on vcdhelp.com
6) Finally Load runbbMpeg.exe located in your DVD2SVCD folder. Load the Default Settings.ini, then simply change the paths where things will go. First is destination and name of the new Mpeg2 and then the location of the Video file to be Remuxed (Step 2) and the location of the faded Audio Mp2 file (step 5). Click Start and bbMpeg will Remux the Video and Audio streams into the destination SVCD Mpeg2 file, ready to be burnt to CDR.
Now.....back to DVD2SVCD to complete the remaining Chapers 10-19

tiffany, for future reference you can download a patch for bbmpeg that will fix this issue of it closing when you start it. this patch is for winNT and winXP...all you have to do is replace a dll file.
