Panic Room / Columbia Tristar DVDs

I'm using the CCE method to copy Panic Room (Superbit Edition), and I've hit a snag.

I successfully re-encoded the movie, reauthored PGC1 of VTS_01 (there's only one PGC in the video title set, so it went very smoothly) and am now merging the re-authored files with the original DVD files. The re-authored movie plays fine by itself (the files Scenarist is generating work great in PowerDVD).

However, when I merge the files (as outlined in doom9's guide) the DVD just sits there and continuously plays the Columbia/Tristar home-video logo sequence (which I believe is in the Video_TS.vob file). I've had this same thing happen on several other Columbia/Tristar titles, and was wondering if anybody knows what is causing this, and how to correct it.

Another strange thing that happens is when I just play the unaltered files (before running IFOupdate, or making the files Region Free with IFOedit) the disc will report that it is Region 1 and I'm not using a Region 1 player (even though I am actually using a Region 1 player), locking me out even before the Columbia/Tristar sequence plays. This is all running from my hard-drive, using both the IFOedit player and PowerDVD. The real disc will play just fine in PowerDVD, however.

I'm using DVD Decrypter to rip the files from the disc to my HDD (which always worked in the past -- it seems to be a Columbia/Tristar-specific problem).

One other concern I have with the movie is the DTS audio track. When I re-authored I just did the Dolby Digital tracks (as that's all that DVD2AVI will extract). Do I need to do anything to remove references to this audio track in any IFO files (IFOupdate fixes the IFO file for VTS_01)? Also, is there a way to extract DTS audio streams so that I can include them when I re-author (I like to keep everything if possible)?

I reauthored Panic Room and everything works fine, what was the process to the t that you use to see where you went wrong, Make sure you selected Get VTS in IfoUpdate. and in order to extract DTS files you have to use DVD2AVI 1.77 you are using an earlier version of it. Hope this helps. Let me know what exatly you did to help

I ripped all the files excluding VTS_01 vob's (main movie) using DVD Decrypter's File Mode.

I ripped PGC1 using DVD Decrypter's IFO mode. To extract the DTS stream, I used DVD Decrypter's Stream Processing mode and demuxed the audio.

I use the older, modified version of DVD2AVI because I use the .D2F file that it generates (DVD2AVI_FRM) in ScenChap...Anyhow, then I made my DVD2AVI project file, set up the frameserve with AVISynth v1.05, and then re-encoded with CCE (bitrate avg. 3500; 0 - 8500 because of DTS stream).

Made a new Scenarist project, imported the PGC and all the audio streams. Export to script, have ScenChap create new script using the IFO+D2F method (which I've had no problems with). Make a new Scenarist project from the new chapter script, include all the audio streams in the project and the subtitles (which I rip with SubRip).

I then re-authored it all together and everything works fine (synced audio, etc.) in the resulting DVD-Video project (the VIDEO_TS directory that Scenarist generates works perfect).

Then, I merge the project using IFOupdate (which I do have Correct VTS Sectors enabled in). Then I make the DVD region free with IFOedit and remove P-UPs.

The thing that is weird is that even before I do anything to the IFO files of the stuff I just ripped from the disc, none of my software DVD players will play the ripped disc (these are the files I ripped using File mode of DVD Decrypter). The disc reports that the players are not Region 1 and the disc is (but all of my players are set to be Region 1 - players are PowerDVD and IFOedit's player). Then, after I disable region checks in the video_ts.ifo file the Columbia / Tristar logo will just loop forever when I play the movie, it never even attempts to load the VTS_01 menu or the film.

I've tried re-authoring with and without the DTS audio track, and both of them do the same thing, so it's not that (I was just curious about that). I think something is messed up in the video_ts.ifo file, but I don't know why...

Any thoughts?

One thing I suggest is not to make these discs region free, that has caused some problems for me and to other people I know, not alot but a few problems so my suggestion is to leave it alone after you reauthored and Second, Power DVD I have experienced the same problem you have, I use WinDVD and that seems to work for me.

I ripped Panic room with the same process as you but used VFAPI with CCE instead of AVISYNTH since I used DVD2AVI 1.77 to extract all audio including DTS. you seemed to of done everything right. I suggest you try from Scratch and you might find that maybe somewhere you did something without noticing that screwed something up. That has happened to me with the movie How High I screwed up somewhere in the process and it wouldnt play but when I just did everything over from the beginning it worked from there on. sorry could be more help. but it seems you did everything right. Just try again you might be surprised

open up every ifo file for this movie and hit the region free button. i had this problem before and it's because the region checking was contained on the video_ts and the main movie. don't forget to hit the save button after you make ech ifo region free.

Hi, I had the same problem with this movie and did what rect recomended and it worked! thanks..

However, I have another problem, I splited the movie to 2 dvdr's, the first disk runs good, the second this skips some chapter, never had this problem before? the first disk contains 12 chapters and the second disk has 16 chapters, when playing the second disk it plays good up to the 10 chapter, then skips to the 16... I am stuck here on what to do....any recomendations?

Well I got it to work. All I did was completely re-author again (had to re-encode to lower the bitrate due to the DTS) and then I re-authored the disc including the DTS track.

Then I merged everything (IFOupdate), and did Region Free on every IFO file and then P-UPs on every one, and finally VTS sectors within IFOedit.

After all that (basically just a repeat of what I did the first time around), the damned thing worked fine. So I'm not sure if I just messed something up inadvertently the first time, or if the missing DTS track was screwing stuff up, or what. Anyhow, all's well on my end.

Good luck to banano, I don't have any suggestions there because I've never done and DVD9 -> DVD5 splits.
