i'm in the process of splitting a 9GB DVD to 2 DVD-Rs using Smartripper(used all files method) and IFOEdit (Using the split command from the VOB-Extras drop down menu)
here are the files that smartripper yields:
VIDEO_TS. (BUP IFO AND VOB files)
note that the VOB file seems to be adummy since the size is just 8K)
VTS_01_0 (BUP IFO AND VOB files, this contains the menu VOB)
VTS_01_xx (this series has the main movie. now get this. some of the extras on the dvd are actually embedded in VTS_01_7.VOB after the main movie ends !!!! also VTS_01_8.VOB contains some more extras)
when i split the movie using ifoedit, both discs will run on my computer if i use powerdvd. however they don't play on my standalone dvd player. also, curiously, disc1 when it plays on my computer starts off from the start of the movie and doesn't go to the menu. however i can go to the menu if chose the root menu. then again, if i select "PLAY MOVIE" from the menu now it plays the MENU back again !!!
