decrypting speed

i hope this belongs here...
i'm just wondering why smartripper is decrypting DVDs only at 1.5x to 2x speed although i've got a 16x DVD drive and a fairly fast hard drive. the processor (PIV 2.0) shouldn't be slowing it down either...
any ideas how i could improve that?

There are a few things to check here.

1. That the drive is actually able to rip CSS protected Video DVDs at the full 16x rated speed. Some manufacturers actually limit the speed at which such discs are read.

2. All your motherboard + ide drives are the very latest versions

3. That you have DMA/UDMA mode enabled for all devices on the ide channel / bus. This must be done in the bios and in the ide controller section of device manager within windows - Look at the properties of the Primary / Secondary IDE Channels.

how can i find out how fast my drive can read CSS protected DVDs?

it took me a litlle longer to check on the dma... even longer to return to the forums ):
but i've looked into my bios where the dma setting is set to auto! don't know exactly what it does...
when i wanted to select dma to ensure dma is really used i discovered i got two modes udma 33 and udma 66
does anbody have an idea which one i should select or what the difference between the two is?

EDIT: concerning the CSS encryption: i tried ripping another non css encrypted DVD and didn't get any more speed ):

In the Advanced Tap in Decrytor you will
find I/O Settings try to change the Value
there, it worked for me.

another thing, when ripping from copied discs (DVD-R) vs ripping from pressed DVD discs your speed is usually lower regardless of the drive you use.

but it's not really important to me since no one i know has a dvd burner! so usually don't get any dvds that are burned anyway...

Anyone got a list of ripping speeds of dvd drives with CSS discs? I've seen one list with average read speeds but I believe that's just ordinary discs.

I have both a Pioneer A04 and a Sony DRU-500A. Why is it that 2X and 4X writers can only read a DVD at approximately 2X? An average movie takes 20 to 30 minutes to simply rip using these writers. A have tried Master, Slave, Cable Select, single unit on IDE cable, multiple units on IDE, UDMA selected, PIO mode selected, nothing helps. Firmware cracks are available to increase the type of disks recognized as being capable of writing at 2X, but never a patch to read faster. A cheap ($39) 16X DVD-ROM will read up to true 12X. Does anybody know why this is? Can anything can be done about it?

DVD writers have pretty low read speeds just because that's what they were designed to do. Look at all the different drives and you'll see low read speeds for dvd-rom. Even 8x drives will only have 12x read spead IIRC
