View Full Version : DVD-R or DVD+r for best to copy to play on standalone players?confused!

hi there,

What I'm wondering is, my friend recently just got his DVD-r, the Pioneer A04, he hasn't had a clue how to use it so today I installed it for him and figured out how to convert an svcd into a vob stream using a mix of besweet, tmpgenc for demultiplexin, and SpruceUp to create the quick menu.

I'm very tempted at moment to buy one for myself, and am reading up on how to rip and convert dvd9 to dvd5's in order to make real copies of dvds rather than just encoding or taking from a standard CVD or SVCD.

What I'm mainly confused about, is do I go for a dvd+r writer or a dvd-r writer like his??? I found link to the dvd+r company group or something and read through that and ti goes on and on about how better their dvd+rw is cos you can edit at any time different points without having to erase and start over again, and how a DVD+R disc will play perfectly in a dvd-video player (I assume they mean a standalone tv dvd player like my Scan model and they're not referring specifically to those that can record directly off the tv in realtime) whereas with a dvd-r it claims it has to write 'compatable' and cannot play in a lot of standalones?

However, found through some pages elsewhere, stuff that seems to suggest that dvd-r is better than dvd+r for playing on standalones problem free

My main use is going to be for copying both my existing CVDs and SVCDs transferring them over, aswell as converting divx's to a higher quality dvd (or minidvdxCVD or however you want to refer to it - I'll look into best way to get best quality at time), and also for backing up general pc data, mp3 files, apps, etc

can someone please clear that up for me?

also, why do the dvd-r's that my friend had (some cheap Bulkpaq make I think) have marked 120mins on them? is that 120mins assuming you use highest quality video settings or is it pretty irrelevant if you've manually converted a dvd9 or a couple of SVCDs to fit so long as the overall size is under 4.7gb (well 4.3gb)

hope you can answer me questions...I'm on virge of buying one soon as possible...thanks in advanve,
Tuck

Hello, about the question of the 120ī on dvds, please see this forum
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34804&highlight=dvdr
Now for the choice ofd dvd burner, thatīs though. You may want to see the new burner from Pionner and people opinions at:

But i believe this question ( dvd-r/dvd+r ) is a litlle tricky. At the end the perfect solution itīs whatīs work for you having considered the prices:

In my case Pionner A04 works great, dvd-r discs arenīt too expensive and the compatibility with standalones is satisfactory.
I think nobody will give a straight answer about this question, but letīs wait and see.
