Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to encoding and while I don't have many problems with live action I keep getting bad results with anime.

1) After doing an IVTC most of the frames look really good but occasionally a frame will have a blending of the previous and next frame it. It doesn't have the 'tell-tale' white lines of interlacing though. This occurs on approx 1 in 5 or 6 frames. What is the colloquial name for a frame like this and how do I get rid of it? Do I want to get rid of it? I'm thinking something like Decimate(5) but not sure.

2) Why do animes require such high bitrates to encode nicely? I would think that their use of solid colors and many static backgrounds would allow them to be encoded very compactly. Instead I find the opposite is true.

Thanks for all your help,
Dave

1) Use the IVTC2.2 filter (downloadable from the download page) with the following settings:

ivtc(44,11,95)

If you want extra security combine IVTC & Decomb that way:

ivtc(44,11,95)
fielddeinterlace()

2) Anime is sharp, has many drawing lines and the movement isn't blurred. There is most of the time much difference between one frame and the following one.

actually bobo, you converted me initially to IVTC 2.2, but i recently found IT and it's MUCH better IMHO. I use the basic settings and it's beyond description.

IT (fps=24,ref="TOP",blend=false)

works A+ on hybrids too. try it out.
