View Full Version : Quality name-brand CD-Rs vs. those "other" discs

I'm new to the entire Taiyo Yuden phenomenon. So after finding out that TY is quality media, and reading some reports on what is “not” quality media, I decide to download Nero Infotool.
So it turns out my 40 something DivXs were all burned to Imation CDRs (aka CMC Magnetics).
I have read that these are not quality discs, along with Ritek and some other brands.
So my question is, should I reburn all these movies to Taiyo Yuden discs so they will last years, like I want them to? I store my movies in CD Booklet (Case Logic) and they are only removed from the case when they are put into my computer. Should the discs be ok or will I find out that a few months from now, they are all coasters.
:scared:

Hi-
Damn good question, and I wish I knew the answer because almost all of mine are CMC Magnetics also. I believe that the Riteks are the bottom of the barrel, the CMC Magnetics in the middle, and the TYs and Kodaks are the best (are Mitsuis made by TY?). I also don't want to find out in 5 years that all my work was for nothing. I'm not sure this is a GKnot specific question, but I'm not sure it would be better placed in the PC Hardware forum, so what the heck. Where I live, TYs are hard to get and much more expensive. If I could get TYs for 15-25 cents each, I'd reburn all mine, but I can't, so I don't.

Well, a good source for TY discs are "Made in Japan" Fuji CDRs. I'm not sure how many discs you want to convert, but Best Buy currently has a deal on Fuji 50pk CDRs (http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=11086139&m=488&cat=516&scat=517). They are $2 a spindle ($12 - $10MIR) with free shipping.
However, not all Fuji discs are "made in Japan," and therefore, not all of them are TY. Your best bet is getting them from a B&M so you can see for yourself (assuming there is a store near you.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a question regarding it :
Taiyo Yuden and That's Professional : Are they different names for the same CD ?

Hi-
Thanks for the tip, agent2099. Even though the rebate was good for only one spindle, and expired 3 weeks ago, it's still not a bad deal for TYs, if that's what they are. Unfortunately, I may have to pay for shipping as there's no BB in my entire state, and no road here yet from California (only free ground shipping-but no tax either).:)
iparout-Taiyo Yuden is the manufacturer. Other companies buy them and market them under their own brand name. And sometimes they'll use different manufacturers for the exact same label. So one way to be sure it's TY is to get your hands on a spindle and see if it says "Made In Japan" somewhere on it. The other main manufacturers are Taiwanese companies. So, I don't know about the "That's Professional" brand. Perhaps someone else does.

Well, I just checked my spindle and was glad to see that my Professional Ultra CD medias are all labeled "Made in Japan", so I guess they are TY...
Lucky me... :D Thanks for the tip. :)

manono, the rebate didn't expire 3 weeks ago. It is effective 10/6 through 10/13. I picked up my TYs yesterday and the rebate form and receipt printed out.
Yeah I was going to mention that fact that it's only one rebate per address. If you had access to two addresses then you could possibly up your quantity to 2 spindles. But of course, even at $0.24 a spindle, it's still not a bad deal.

Yep-you're right agent2099, and I'm wrong. I misread the top line of the 2 rebate choices. And 10 bucks is better than no bucks and will cover the shipping to Hawaii, if they decide to charge me (on my "pretend" order it was unclear)

I just got back from Best Buy to pick up my second spindle of TYs. It appears that ALL of Best Buys Fuji 50PK are "Made in Japan." I cannot guarantee it, but I checked about 5 out of the 20 or so spindles there, they were all MIJ, even the spindles w/o the screw top. Happy Hunting :)

I usually use traxdata cds, it says they're made by "prodisc". Anyone heard of them?

I believe that Ritek have greatly improved since their old 4x cds, but the repuatation has stuck.
They used to manufacture them using long dye strategy (Cyanine, Azo etc) these are the ones to avoid. Since then they have began using short strategy (phthalocyanine) which are much better. You should have no problem with these.
Traxdata have used ritek cds for a long time, and their newer ones are fine. If nero info tool doesn't give you the dye used try cdr identifier instead.
