Hey guys,

Thanks for all your answers to my previous question on DVD burning, I sorted the problem by removing my other DVD drive which must have been causing conflicts. Sadly that is all irrelevant now as my drive is totally not-working.

Basically speaking the drive wont even read any discs or even show that a disc is in there at all, even in Nero Tool and other software. The drive shows up fine in Bios and Windows but just wont recognise any media in it, be it DVDs or CDs.

The problem started when I tried to remove a "threaded" screw (a screw that is stuck and can't be undone) on the runner on the side of the drive, as I wanted to insert it in my PC case and the runners on it weren't in the right position, so I had to move them. So anyway, the screw wouldn't move so I had to force it with pliers, but I didn't really touch the drive itself at all. I am guessing the force must have damaged it some how. That was the only way the screw would come out though. The drive worked fine before that (I ran it out of the case at first just for a day as a tester), but not now, just seems logical it broke that way.

But how the hell can I fix it without buying a new drive ? This one is only 2 days old as it is. I insert a disc and it "clunks" a few times, like "click, click, click" and even the windows XP mouse pointer disc icon appears quickly, so information must be feeding back to the PC. I have ruled out any chance of it being the ribbon, or jumpers, or anything like that, as I have tried different ways LOADS and LOADS of times, you name it, I have probably tried it.

Has anyone encountered this problem before though ? If so then do you know how to fix it ? The loud clunking must mean something, maybe it is stuck or something ? The disc spins okay, the drive opens okay, it shuts okay. Very odd.

Any technical bods have any ideas for me ?

Thanks all.

Are you using Windows ME?

If so it might be time to preform a completely new install.

You would probably best to put it back to an original (looks as at worst) with putting back the screw and whatever, and use the Pioneer warranty.

My personnal advice, for others, as it seems too late for you, would be : Do not touch to DVD ROM DVD burner, even CD ROM or burner, especially lens parts. I often read stories about people who cleaned their lens with cotton or other thing like that. Do not do that, it's really sensitive pieces. Most of the time, it just kill the reader/burner.
and DVD burner are state of the art lens and electronics, the more efficient but the more sensitive also.
