This is good news and what I thought was the case actually.

My question is though, what is the objective for XviD? Is it to implement more and more of the MPEG4 specs 'till we have the untimate MPEG4 codec or is there some other objective?

Is there any written plan on which of the various parts of the spec will be implemented next? I can only imagine that BFrames are next on the list to be completed, but really I have no idea!

I appreciate that nobody wants to get into a 'when for this feature' or 'when for that feature' but is there any high level development path or is the growth more organic?

B-frames are working nicely in the dev branch of the code. The next "major" feature will probably be quarter-pel support.

XviD's goal is to support as much of the MPEG-4 spec as possible, and exploit each feature to its best potential. Of course this will take a long time to complete, if its even possible for the resources available.

The process of actually adding features is more or less ad-hoc. If someone feels like coding it, they code it.

I saw some code on dynamic scene decompilation (reducing a scene into it's static parts, which can be pieced together, and then simply moving the parts of the scene, saving lots and lots of space).

Incorporating this into XviD would give it a huge advantage over DivX, etc., since such implementations are really just "Mpeg-2++", and don't incorporate the radical changes in Mpeg-4.

However, I shouldn't be mentioning this, since I'm not willing to incorporate the changes, and it wouldn't be right to ask someone else to.

I have also posted that idea on xvid.org last time.But they said it would be very difficult to put it in the codec. Because it will take time to encode a video and someone has to discribe in the scenes (in programming laguage)in for that to work. But it would really be a milestone in video encoding if that were possible. But w/ the current situation of Xvid it seems like even incorporting B-frames would take another millennium xvid and with the Sigma Design case. It can't expect much real action in xvid!!!

xvid.org is now up again!

And there are some good news from Isibaar: there are new objectives, g-pel, new motion estimation engine... well, you´d better read Isibaar words by your own. But the most interesting point is that they aim to get a 1.0 version by new year.

Well I don't know how to use the CVS thingy!!! As long its not incorporated in the installer ver there may bugs or some reason I don't know okey!!! We all know cases could take like 4ever to be done. If they planed to be dormant for as the case is still alive they might as well stop(which they haven't done thank god!!!).B-frames maybe in the CVS(whatever that means) but 4 sure it's not perfect yet. But anyways glad that Xvid is back online!!!
