Jerky Again!!

From vcd to multi dvd-r after writing to a dvd-r ive upped the bitrate from something like 1150 to as much as 2000 but as the screen pans from left to right or up then down the screen seems to jump & skip, whats happnin? any ideas?

Since you are using VCD sources, we may assume that these are Progressively encoded, so it is unlikely that you are experiencing jumpiness due to field-encoding issues. It's far more likely, in your particular instance, to be a faulty multiplexing issue.

However, before I get bogged-down in multiplexing issues, may I ask why you have decided to re-encode? If you are using a VCD source, then there is no way you can possibly hope to improve the quality, regardless of what bitrate you use when re-encoding. VCD MPEG sources are already poorly compressed, with numerous artifacts, due to the lack of permitted bitrate (1150kbps, as you correctly stated).

If I were you, I'd simply use the original VCD MPEG files (minus the 44.1khz audio, of course). Then simply upsample the audio to 48khz and (theoretically) everything should remain in synch. I did this with the Back to the Future VCD Trilogy and it worked ok, within the quality restrictions of the original VCD sources. Don't forget that VCD is 352x288 (assuming PAL), which is SIF - Standard Interface Format. The DVD specification accepts this frame size for native MPEG1 stream, so you can just drop them straight into your DVD authoring application, once the above audio issue has been dealt with.
