16:9 ?

I'm encoding my movies with CCE using avisynth. I encode for 16:9 widescreen. I compile in maestro for 16:9

The movie plays in this format on the pc with PowerDVD
but when I play it on my stand alone dvd player it is not widescreeen format. I don't change any settings on my dvd player.

Why is this?

check your DVD player setup for 'TV Type'

if you have a 4:3 tv, set it to 4:3 Letterbox or Pan/Scan (if the dvd supports pan/scan, otherwise it work in Letterbox). for a 16:9 tv, choose the 16:9 option.

Do you have a 4:3 TV, and does it appear "Squished"? If so, you have to tell your DVD player that you have a 4:3 TV instead of a 16:9 one. It will then add black bars to the movie when you play it.

Widescreen is misleading, or rather does not automatically mean 16:9. Some widescreen movies are in 4:3, but only because the picture provided by the movie on the DVD disc includes the black bars at the top and bottom.

When a movie is in 16:9 widescreen the TV provides the black bars.


I guess the moral of this story is, ALWAYS LISTEN TO DVD2AVI. If it says 4:3 on a widescreen movie, you better damn well make your settings 4:3 Letterbox even if it seems counter-intuitive.
