The pentium is probably better for DivX5, however the AMD will probably be better for most other (non video encoding) tasks.

The processor is important but so are other things such as ram and motherboard are importnat. Check out benchmark tests at anandtech.com, tomshardware, and pcworld. :)

The differences are rather small, however, between the P4 and the Athlon of same PR (2400+ really runs at 2.00GHz, of course).
