DivXnetworks has released a Software Development Kit (http://www.divxnetworks.com/products/divx_gamecube_sdk.php) for the GameCube. The kit wil make it possible to play DivX movies on the GameCube.

FEATURES:
Features

Superior Compression: Maximize the 1.3GB limit on the Gamecube disc. The DivX for Gamecube SDK creates DVD-quality cinematics at file sizes 7-10 times smaller than MPEG-2 with high performance playback of in game cut- scenes.

Faster Encoding Speed: With encoding speeds 2-3X faster than real time, developers save a significant amount of time compressing cinematics. Scenes that used to take hours can be encoded in mere minutes.

Professional Video Tools: DivX for Gamecube lets developers incorporate the advanced features of DivX 5.02 Pro, offering support for advanced features including pyschovisual modeling, bi-directional encoding, and global motion compensation.

Ability to Optimize Gekko Extensions: Hand-optimized assembler-code for maximum usage of all Gamecube CPU ("Gekko") extensions and minimal cache misses.

Faster Decoding Speed: DivX offers incredible performance speed that far outshines competitive technologies. Uses both CPU and graphics chip ("Flipper") in parallel for extremely fast performance.

Flexible Integration: DivX for Gamecube was designed to provide maximum flexibility and ease of use, with the ability to map video on any surface and run in parallel with other applications. The product also offers tight integration with the MusyX™ and AX sound libraries for audio streaming. MusyX's SMaL programming language allows writing simple programs, which take full control of the sound over time. E.g., parameters may be changed in reaction to value changes of MIDI controllers. Even multiple samples may be started. The possibilities are endless.

Well that sounds way interesting but also way limited regarding the particuliar mini-DVD format that the cube "eats".
It will certainly fits on the next cube (don't remember the name...)wich is large enough and technically able to "eat" usual 12cm cds

that is regarding creating our own cube-designed-divx of couse, it's one of the best news in the gaming sphere this week (beside mario sunshine euro release)

A+
