Pioneer A04 Drive - video fragmenting when watching

I have a pioneer A04 burner, and have been having a few problems burning DVD's that I have re-encoded to fit on 4.7GB DVD-r.
If I use high quality disks (verbatim etc) they work fine the whole way through. But it seems when I use generic disks, they seem to work fine, but when I get to about 85% or so through the movie, the video starts getting jittering, and fragments appear etc. I have also had a few disks screw up while burning at around the same percentage.
Do you guys reckon this could be a problem with the burner? i.e the laser or something, or is it just the disks, I have tried 2 different generic medias, and they both seem to do it.
If I burn DVD's that do not need re-encoding (just rip them and then use ifoedit, or if small enough just burn the iso in dvd decryptor), they seem to play fine on all the disks, which then suggests that its a problem with my encoding process, but they play fine on high quality disks and also powerdvd.
I'm really not too sure what exactly the problem is, any help would be appreciated.

Read the forum, what your describing is one of the problems with crap media, its not your burner, or encoding, just don't buy generic media, they're cheap for a reason and now you know why, they're just not as trustworthy as name brand, they may play ok on a certain player or under certain conditions, but with name brand you won't have to worry about all this crap

It definitely sounds like a media issue. Have you been able to identify the media manufacturer, using something like ADVDinfo? It would probably help the group if you could ID the manufacturer. That way others could avoid the same problems.

I can recommend Ritek (RITEKG3 media) and PrimeDisc, if you are looking for inexpensive media. Otherwise, if you find you are happy with the price/performance of Pioneer, Apple, TDK, then by all means use it. But there are less expensive brands that can give you good results.

Not all generic media is crap.

Which generic media did you try?

I've had good luck with Ritek's.

I fixed this problem by burning the resulting reencoded movie through maestrodvd, this creates perfectly working dvd-r's all the way through 100%. everytime I remuxed the resulting rempeg2 file back into a vts format through ifoedit it would skip and jitter. So I stick with maestro for reencode and ifoedit/image/burn for movies under dvd-r size

Hey dvd_maniac,

Are you saying that you use maestro as your burning app? If so,
can you tell me how to get maestro to recognize the DVDR drive.
I've been able to make the image with maestro but when I try to burn to the DVDR maestro reports that no drive available.
