Faster Encoding speed

I want to upgrade my cpu so that i get faster encoding times... currently i have a regular athlon 1.2 GHz and get encoding speeds of 1.0-1.1 on average... I'm trying to decide between a 2.4, 2.53 Pentium or a xp2400+ or xp2600+ athlon... any opinions??? and how fast would i most likely get (NTSC encoding)

Regarding P4 2.4 vs 2.53, save your money and go for the 2.4 - there's very little REAL performance difference.

I run a 2.26, and it works very nicely with CCE-SP, but I must admit that an Athlon XP2600 would probably walk all over it for sheer number crunching, so the XP2600 is probably your best bet *overall*.

What speeds do you get with your 2.2??? do you know if there is a big difference between the 2.2 and the 2.4, or for the money would the 2.2 be better??? also is it a 400MHz or 533(i think that's the other)... what speed ram are you using/suggest???

Well, to be honest, I very rarely encode DVD rips, so my results aren't going to be relevant to you if that's what you are looking to do with your machine. AVIsynth is faster, but I use DVD-2-AVI out of pure lazyness, on the very rare occasions that I convert a DVD Rip. In these instances, converting ripped VOBs, using DVD-2-AVI as the frameserver, I get marginally faster then realtime. As I said, this can be improved upon with AVIsynth, but I don't recall by how much on my system.

These encodes are *not* being resized - they remain at full res (PAL 720x576).

If you decide to go the Intel route, then I definitely recommend going for the 533mhz bus, since general bandwidth is also improved - not just on-CPU bandwidth.
