View Full Version : Gknot and frame errors

I have been encoding manually for quite some time, and recently decided that to save time I would try to use Gordian to encode.
My problem is probably a simple one, but, alas, I have been unsuccessful. I am getting this error:
Warning: number of counted frames differs from settings!
I then get two passes finished and end up with a 26-32 mb avi file that looks like a preview.
I read of an error in Gknot that required a reinstall if it was installed after Divx 5, so I did this. I still get the same error.
I have followed the Gknot guide found on Doom 9 for Gknot and D5 to the letter.
Does anyone know what could be the problem?
I have made successful two passes of same files using only virtual dub and ripping utils.
I am getting the idea maybe I should go back to that. Please help.

Hi realto and welcome to the forums-
Are you by chance using the Compress Test .avs to encode the full movie? To check, open the .avs and see if this line near the bottom is activated (no "#" in front of it):
SelectRangeEvery(280,14)
If so, either put the "#" to the left of it or delete the line and try again.

I checked the file. I can quote it here for the part you speak of:
# COMPRESSIBILITY CHECK
# !!!!Snip Size now has to be 14 for use in GKnot!
#SelectRangeEvery(280,14)
#
# FOOL CCEnc
#ResampleAudio(44100)
This is what it looks like with no editing from me.
I didn't really understand what you meant, but maybe you can tell me if it is right or wrong...

Hi-
That portion of the .avs looks OK to me, but a couple of things you said make me wonder:
Warning: number of counted frames differs from settings! and:
I then get two passes finished and end up with a 26-32 mb avi file that looks like a preview.
The file size you're getting (before audio is added I'm assuming) points to that mistake. A couple of ways to check-open the finished .avi in Nandub and start advancing a frame at a time. If I'm correct, you should get a switch every 14 frames. Another way to check is to divide the settings frames by 20 and it should come out close to the counted frames (or vice-versa, I forget-divide the larger number).
I'm not really sure what you mean that it looks like a preview. Do you mean that it looks real jerky when played?
Another thing to check is to go into the encoder tab of GKnot and make sure that the frame server is pointing to the .avs that you showed me part of.
But if I'm wrong, you might have to look into such things as deleting DivX4 if you also have it installed, reinstalling DivX5, or reinstalling GKnot (after Deleting Registry Keys in the Options Tab), and then reinstalling DivX5 again afterwards.

Hi, I am a new at this GKnot. but i did have a few Divx done with GK b4, now i am running into the similar prob, I did un/reinstalled Divx4 and 5pro. but still...I have tried 1CD and 2CD..no luck..
BTW, I am interested in how to encode without GK with VDub is there a guide i can follow?

Hi-
Yep-Your problem sounds similar. Is the DivX5 codec installed (I know you said it was, but double check). Open VDub and go Video-Compression and look for DivX5.02. I couldn't quite make sense of this:
I did un/reinstalled Divx4 and 5pro.
So, you uninstalled DivX4 and then reinstalled DivX5, right? Make sure there's no sign of DivX4, either in VDub or the Program Files. When in doubt, it's always a good idea to uninstall GKnot and then install it and all the updates (but without DivX4), followed by DivX5.
As for running DivX5 directly in VDub: Use GKnot for doing cropping and resizing, do your sound with BeSweet or HeadAC3he so you can fill in the Audio Bit Rate and tick the Overhead for the Audio Type (both in GKnot). Get your video bit rate from GKnot, and also use GKnot for generating the .avs. Then go to Doom9's DivX5 Guide (http://www.doom9.org/divx5-vdub.htm), and you should be all set. Let me know if that works better for you (it won't allow you to encode the end-credits at a lower bit rate though-you'll have to do that yourself if it's important to you). Then all the people having no luck with the Automated 2-pass GKnot-DivX5 method can be sent directly to VDub.

The DivX 5 codec. Manono gave you a method to check that.
The AviSynth script (.avs file) produced by Gknot. Try opening the X-MEN.avs file in Virtual Dub, and see if you can move the slider past frame 3316. If you can't, then the problem may be in the script, or...
It may be in the dvd2avi project (.d2v file) you created. Open the .d2v in Gknot, and see if you can move the slider past frame 3316. If not, it may be this, or it may be....

Just a thought - Is the FPS box showing 25 fps? Or is it set to 23.976 or 30fps? I have heard that if you mistakenly change this it will cause problems.

Thank you for the help guys...
1 question, is there any special options needed to be tick in DVD2AVI
beside Yuv options?
and i did look at my avs, d2v files, they all seems to be fine..(can be view in both GKnot and VDub), so i am just wondering if there might be something wrong with my MV or log files how can i check them??( do they have anything to do with my prob? I have no idea what they are hee hee. sorry to sound so stupid)
I am going to redo the whole process slowly....using GKnot
but i'll have to finish me uni assignment first...why do uni make us work so hard???

the .log file produced by the first pass (not the gknot .log), is a frame-by-frame analysis of the video stream. It is used by the second pass to make the encoding.
It's mandatory for 2-pass encoding.
Your first pass only found 3316 frames, which is 00:02:12.64 of video.
The more I think about this, the more I think it's codec -- or you ran out of disk space during the first pass. But I'd think you'd have seen different errors.
If you didn't run out of space, then try re-installing Divx 5. It couldn't hurt anything, and might eliminate this problem.

could this make it all stuffed up??
i did unstall and reinstall DIvX5.. again, but this time it counted to approx 500~ and finished the first pass.i think it is the codec. guess i'll try the manual method after i try the GKnot again tonight... I won't give up that easy!!!!
Thanks for all ur help

I don't understand why you have three different loading factors at each resolution.
But you do usually want to avoid resizing ABOVE your input resolution. Uncropped DVDs are 720x480 when NTSC, and 720x576 when PAL. Cropping reduces input resolution further.

I don't think it is the codec per se...I think messing with some of Gnot's settings does it.I have encoded video and it worked and then tried to encode something else and have the same problem. I reinstalled the codec, and it made no difference. I am experimenting with Gnot to see if there is a bug in the settings that causes this when messed with.
Good Luck.

uncroping...hum...
I was just testing if there is any Resolution seting that does't give me the 'error' cos in the DivX guide it said to keep the comp check around 0.26 or so.. jus one thing it seems not right for me..
now i am going to try installing Divx 5(not pro), and Divx 4 nex if Divx5 does't work(after un/reinstall of course)....and the testing continue...
I don't really know which setting to muck around with, but will try from the basic...

FatFree: you may have misread the guide.
Use b/p*f numbers as a resolution ESTIMATOR prior to your first compressibility check. At that point, use the load% returned by the test, and any subsequent tests, and ignore b/p*f values.

I have reinstalled DivX 5 (not pro) codec, and seems to work for now. but i'll have to try on others movies just to really make sure if it is working probably.
anyone think i should try to install DivX5pro just for try in error
or should i stick with the one now since its working.....??

oh man,
i don't know any more, after doing one movie, the nex one encounter the exact same prob. , I have not done any advance setting, just doing the normal encoding... man... i'll keep trying.
one thing, think net wroking could use up the cpu processing power and cause the prob.? or by using the comp. during encoding(1st pass or 2nd pass) could cause the prob?
thanks..

The only way that using your computer while encoding could cause problems is if the computer crashed. Since everything you are doing is digital, using the computer only slows down the encode, and won't alter it.
What problems are you still having?

same prob. as i always have...
i tried to encode the movie using GKnot and won't get through the first pass easyly (see log I posted above)nothing much have changed, but i did have encoded one movie after i posted(few days ago) but the same prob seems hanging sround... don't understand much y..
I did't do anything to the setting of GKnot (since i am still new at it) nor DivX or Vdub..., Quite sure i followed the guide..since i did a few sucessful encoding...
un/reinstalled DivX5 and DivX5 pro, un/reinstalled GKnots...( the usual fix to the prob)
i think it might be the codec prob... but not for sure..
Question: It is OK to install XviD as well as DivX?(reason for prob?) but i did the last movie WITH the Xvid installed...hmmm
Question: Resolution setting caurse 1st pass stuffed up?

another Question...
what codec or filters or things is appear in peoples Vdub video-compression selection?
I wonder if there is any in conflect in there...
BTW how is Realto doing with his encoding??

Hi-
There's no conflict between XviD and DivX5. It's fine to have them both. The main conflict will be between DivX4 and DivX5. Make sure you don't have DivX4 installed.
The weird resolutions you are playing around with wouldn't be the cause of the problem, but I don't recommend you use resolutions higher than that of the DVD with the black bars cut off.

hmmmmm.....
ok.. my comp. spec.:
-BE6 MB
-GForce VDO card
-256Mb RAM
-60Gb HDD (partitioned 20:20:20)
-WinXP (no SP1)
-some CAD software installed...nothing special
-GKnots 2.1+update+update
-checked in Vdub, no DivX 4 installed or DivX3.(any check to make really sure there is only DivX5 installed?)
-also checked form add/remove from control panel
...what else could be the prob...mmm..
what i'll try to do now is...un/reinstall DivX5 and reinstall Vdub...see how it goes...
see u guys in a few days.
to be contuinue...
I'll be back...

Total system crash...Still getting back up and running...Mine is happening about every 3 encodes...I think it may have to do with inverse telecine setting in the save and encode part of dvd2avi inside of gnot....This is all a theory of course...But...My search continues...

i know i shoud't really be asking this but...
is there another all-in-one DivX software other then GKnots, I have read from Doom's artical saying FairUse takes too long to encode and all, i am so lost in GKnot for now, i am willing to do some manual encoding as well...any good guide (from start to finish - fast encoding..I did tried afterdawn.com guide, it took a while,23 odd hurs if i remember it right)
Oh, BTW, I did tried using the AVS file form the fail GKnots encode and try to run it in Vdub, but no success as well...very confuse. i would love to be able to use GKnot after me get meself a better comp
i'll try encoding in GK in the mean time...it is great prog. and it worked b4 on the same comp...do't understand

Hi-
...try to run it in Vdub, but no success as well
What happens when you open the .avs in VDub and just scroll around? Does it still crash? That could be the problem. Perhaps you can post the .avs here (but delete all the lines with "#" in front).
Earlier in the thread I gave you some quick instructions how to encode outside of GKnot and pointed you to Doom9's Guide.

the AVS file i open in Vdub scroll fine from start to end..
I did tried to run the AVS file in Vdub following the guide, but it still giving me error in the 1st pass and all.
let me try to post the avs file....they all have # in front (it is the first time i look into an AVS file. sorry if i sound too newbie)

Hi-
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the .avs, except next time you can delete the lines beginning with "#". There are only 4 lines in there that actually do anything. Also, you didn't crop the black bars. You should always do that. Also, I'd recommend setting the H-Modul back to 16-that height of 332 is only mod 4. Doing that will aid in the compressibility.
So, I think it has to be a codec problem. Have a look inside the GKnot log file and look to see if there's a line after the first pass was done about "Unable to open movie.log" or something like that. Or post the log here if you can't figure it out. I think you're one of the "lucky" ones that has the DivX5 codec disappear from time to time. You've looked inside VDub and Video-Compression and confirmed that the DivX5 codec is actually installed, right? Please check again and see if it's listed along with the other codecs.
FatFreeSam

Nope, still not working....I also suspect it would be the codec, but I have reinstalled it so many time, but still not solve the error..
and I have double checked codes were installed. I have tested, if i don't install the codec, the 2nd pass will blow out to 3Gb+ file... but I did look in Vdub and Control panel..(any where i could have missed?)
Log file seems OK except...the counting part, it open the log file ok...here is the log.. pretty much the same as the first one i posted...
I also tried to encode in VDub but the thing do't seems right is:it encode Very, I mean Very fast...(but without sucess). in 1hur it finished...sometimes error.
I got a Question to ask: Do I needed to put all the VOB, D2V, AC3 files all in the same folder when encoding?? and can i only keep the D2V and AC3 file(the vob is taking lots of space)?

Hi FatFreeSam-
Well, I see nothing that jumps out as being wrong (except that counted frames thing). Sometimes it seems that DivX5 is more trouble than it's worth. If you're interested, I can teach you to make a movie, but it will be different than your current method (but mine works). PM me if interested.

i havent actaully solved this problem but i`vw isolated it. I`ve been having exactly the same problem as the people in this thread. I`ve noticed most people seem to have fixed it by reinstalling the codec. It seems that the Pro features of the codec become easily corrupted and even a reinstall does not fix them properly. Therefore if you are having these problems just turn off the pro features or just use the non pro divx 5

Hi, thats great! i can't wait till i have time and try that out... but one thing though, i am using DivX 5 (no pro)... this is what i'll do, reinstall DivX5pro, and not use the pro function..Thats it!!..but i'll be busy in the next few day, so I'll be back...

Hi, I am back. and found what wrong.
at least in my case, it is all heat related. GKnots works fine...
i am using an overclocked CII CPU, and found count errors, during encoding. after some help from Manono, the conclusion was that the CPU is too stress in the encoding process, and corrupt the process... after i clocked back to the original speed, it all went well... if other people have the same problems, it could also due to heating (hardware) prob. make sure the CPU is cool enough...
Thats all folks, happy encoding...

Howdy All, I too have been having angst over this frame count business. Though my investigations have led me to a few revelations. The current saga involves DVD2 of the "Tenchi Muno!" Box set. With the whole DVD extracted to a single .VOB, any encoding with GK would get a quarter the way through... GK Logs reporting frame count errors, DivX first pass log only extending a quarter of the way through the total...
The .avs of the project seemed fine. could seek past the "stop point", play, whatever. I re created the .d2v - same problem, re-extracted the vobs to a single vob, re-extracted to individual vobs, all of which produced an identical problem.
Have also tried the reinstallations of DivX. both Pro and standard. Tweaked settings, With no effect. Frame counts were still only a quater of what they should of been.
I went back to school and set up an encode manually. (Ahh the good old days). Configured VDub as Gknot does (Codec settings for first pass, etc) and what happened was that at the magic moment;
"Avisynth read error: Avisynth: caught an access violation at 0x01ad1d2a, attempting to read from 0x022baefc"
I was running with AviSynth 1.0b6. Upgraded to v2.0 but the same problem arose. So I dunno what to do next. But I think I can say that it is not GK, nor the DivX codecs that are the problem. Think I may play with Smart Ripper and DVD2AVI.
But Anyway that is my ten cents worth... :)

Hi Aesop and welcome to the forums.
That was a pretty thorough investigation. After working with Sam above on this (and also encoding outside of GKnot and getting that same Access Violation), I've decided that hardware issues may figure into the problem more often than I had first suspected, and not necessarily with only overclocked systems. So, you're sure the system is stable? Have you run Prime95 overnight and not gotten any errors? Are you able to monitor CPU Temps to rule out heat buildup now that summer's coming to Oz? Are these Access Violations happening at the same place every time (perhaps pointing to an .avs problem), or does the encoding stop at seemingly random places?
Since you know your way around DivX5 now, have you tried to rip just part of a movie? You might try making a .d2v from just a chapter of the movie, or use the [ and ] buttons in DVD2AVI to get just a portion of the movie. Or you might insert something like Trim(20000,30000) at the bottom of the .avs and encode in 1 pass quantization mode to see if you can get part of the movie.
And, even though from your tests it seems to be OK, you might post the .avs (without the lines beginning with "#"). If you've read this long thread from the beginning, then you'll know that Sam was having a heck of a time for awhile, but he's encoding away happily now.
Edit-I was just thinking. It's anime, so there might be subs involved. Try and make the VobSub line the last in the .avs (if you're crashing at the same place every time, this might explain it). I've had crashes before when the VobSub line is left where GKnot puts it.

I was typing just a bit too slow...
it could be Hardware related,
I was't too sure if it is the same prob. as i have encountered.
my case is that my comp. CPU were stressed too much when encoding and it crash: I have learnt that crashing does't necessarily mean comp. shut down, but also (in my case) data corruption, so the data cannot be process probably (error messages started to appear).
i have notice u are in Aust, and the weather is getting warmer, your computer might not be able to handle the heat. you 'll needed to make sure it is cool enough INSIDE your computer.(install fan or remove casing)
as my CPU is overclocked, now when i encode during the cool nights, i still put the clockspeed back to its original speed to make sure of its stability...
I don't know much about encoding, yet, but if u think the problem is similar, do try to cool your CPU during encoding...
does it only happen to the ONE VOB?
thats all i've got to say about that...
Aesop
5th November 2002, 12:53
Howdy, More news from the front lines... Not much movement I am afraid. I thought about the overclocked system being a problem. My computer is a Duron 800 (8x100) which I have been running at 920 (8x115) for about the past year or so. I brought the speed back down to 800 and tried a test last night, I set up GK to perform exactly the same encode five times. And each of those five times there was the same problem, at exactly the same point (and I mean exactly, frame 59145 of 279654 .
The strange thing is that if I load the avs directly into VDub, advance to a few frames before this point and play, I see the AviSynth error only 10% of the time over a good few trials. I think when the computer was running at 920 this number was a little higher but I have not tried enough times to make anything statistically significant..
However, I found that if I created a DVD2AVI project that encompassed only this "problem" area, I had no problems, it encoded fine everytime. What this may mean is that there is some sort of time dependant interaction going on with AVISynth? I don't know how these things work...
Aesop
5th November 2002, 12:54
But there is still this instability thing. Why playing exactly the same few seconds through AVIsynth | VDub should cause problems only 10% of the time. It seems like a hardware / configuration type problem but my machine is currently running in absolute stock standard mode. Overclocking and heat type probs in my experience manifest themselves as spontaneous system hangs or resets. Here it is merely AVISynth crashing and a matter of reloading the avs into VDub... but thanks for noticing the weather around here, luckily we are still a month or two away from the real heat ;-)
I think what I might do is just create d2v projects around each episode. I originally was trying to avoid doing this because I could not be bothered trying to figure out how to split vobsub's sub files up. It seemed easier to encode the whole DVD and hope there was a keyframe at the start of each episode. Though I am still intrigued by what this problem is. I was looking through some of my notes on earlier encoding projects and noticed that I had this problem once before with an episode of Bubble Gum Crisis 2032. At that time I think I just reinstalled DivX and that fixed it, though now I am wondering if I just managed to fluke it, or whether I inadvertantly played with the d2v project files a little...
I will see what happens next :)

Hi-
Try this:
LoadPlugin("E:\c\GORDIA~1\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\Temp\Tenchi DVD2.d2v")
crop(10,0,701,478)
BilinearResize(320,240)
VobSub("E:\Temp\2\2 sub\vts_01_0")
And don't forget the VobSub plugin. I mentioned it might be the subs earlier, but maybe you didn't see it. And I also recommend making your crops even numbers, like maybe:
crop(10,0,700,478)
or whatever it takes to get rid of the black bars and to maintain proper AR.

Howdy again, I did try the vobsub command at the end of the script. Even omitted it altogether, made no difference. Never noticed the odd number in the crop there, might give that one a bit of a tweak... ;-)

Hi-
Gee-now you have me stumped, unless it's the hardware issue, but why would it crash at that one frame? What's so special about frame #59145?
I had one fellow once that was having similar problems, and he traced it to his resolution. He swore he got crashes unless the resolution was at least 512x384. It didn't sound too plausible to me, but he said that was the answer to his problem (he had been encoding anime episodes at 480x360 or something like that). It might upset your plans to put 5 or 6 episodes on a CD, but you might give that one a try.

Howdy again, That odd number in the crop didn't amount to much. tried it with "crop(10,0,700,478)"... same thing.
Trying the higher resolution as we speak, but looks like it will take a while ;-)

Hi
I just want to say that I have the same problem. Until now I have encoded more than 200 movies in 4 different computers with out any problems at resolutions 720xXXX, 704xXXX. Now with my new computer I have the same problem. With 3 movies I tried to encode.
My script is very simple:
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\GORDIA~1\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("D:\DVD\Monster\monster.d2v")
crop(0,0,719,576)
BicubicResize(720,528,0,0.75)
When I tried to encode manually with VDub it gives me during the first pass:
Avisynth read error:
Avisynth: caught an access violation at 0x0119bdf8, attempting to write to 0x00000030
I have installed the Avisynth 2.06 and tried with VDub 1.4.10 and 1.4.11.
I tried also with both DivX 5.0.2 versions.
A friend of mine had the same problem.
This thread looks similar I think:

Aesop-
That thread that SubConscious found gave me an idea. If it's that one frame and that frame only that's causing the problem, then just cut it out:
LoadPlugin("E:\c\GORDIA~1\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\Temp\Tenchi DVD2.d2v")
A=Trim(0,59144).crop(10,0,701,478).BilinearResize(320,240)
B=Trim(59146,0).crop(10,0,701,478).BilinearResize(320,240)
A+B
VobSub("E:\Temp\2\2 sub\vts_01_0")
Together with the VobSub LoadPlugin line that you left out before. After the frame is cut out, both the subs and the audio will be asynch by 40ms or so, but that won't be noticeable. It's not a very clean solution, I know, but maybe this is a one time problem.
As for you SubConscious, you obviously know what you're doing, having encoded over 200 movies. So, have you proved to your satisfaction that it's not a hardware problem caused by your new computer? Do you know that it's absolutely stable? Can you run Prime95 overnight to check? Can you monitor heat buildup during encoding with Motherboard Monitor or some such utility? Try taking the cover off and blowing a table fan on it while encoding and see if that makes a difference. If it's overclocked, return it to the defaults and run a test encode.

Hi again,
I had tested the temperature during the encoding. The maximum value was 51C (with CPU fan set to 6250rpm). The temperature was stable the most of the time at this maximum value, which shows that it is not the peak value that cause the read error. I don’t have my CPU overclocked so from that point of view it must be stable.
I will try to run Prime95, but I can’t assure you that I can do it soon because I need the computer and I don’t put it overnight because of the noise. But until now didn’t showed any instability.
For additional information’s my computer is composed with:
AMD 2000+ XP
Gigabyte GA-7VAXP
Samsung 2700 512MB
2 X WD 60GB 8mb buffer (RAID stripe)
But I think it must be a problem with Avisynth or an other conflict because as I told you a friend of mine has the same problem and as I can see this problem is very popular.

Hi-
Well, the .avs is fine (except I'd make my crops all even numbers), and you seem to prove the hardware's not at fault. There's nothing wrong with those temps, as you know. So, who knows? I might suggest you try an encoding outside of GKnot to see if you have any better luck. The only thing extra you'll have to do is to create the audio yourself, which I'm sure you know how to do by now. Then you can follow this guide after you've created the .avs:

Maybe I didn’t make my self clear.
I said to my first post that I tried to encode manually with VDub by loading the .avs that it is created with GKnot. The settings which I was using were the ones that you showed me from the guide. When I encode manually with VDub then the “Avisynth read error” appears. If I encode through GKnot, when the error occurs VDub starts automatically the second-pass. This happens too fast and you don’t have time to see the read error. You just see in the log the “Frame Count” error, because of the difference of the whole movie’s frames and the processed frames from the first-pass.
So as you see encoding outside GKnot is the same thing with the same problems.
I believe that more people have the same problem but they just don’t post. If you see the views of this thread are more than any other thread (except the sticky ones).
Note: I only want the solution for this problem to be found. I don’t like the irony that I can understand through your posts about my number of encodes. I must inform you that I started encoding before 3 years. I just wanted to show you that I am not doing a mistake that someone may do when it is his first time.

Howdy All,
Have found a work around for the situation - Splitting up the project into a number of DVD2AVI project files and performing seperate encodes on each, then recombining the resultant avi's (or whatever).
But I still can not figure out why this should happen. As far as I can tell it is an issue with AVISynth but I don't know how to verify that accurately..... :sly:

Aesop-
Good going. I hope you don't have to do that for all of your future encodes. Have you installed the latest AviSynth 2.06 (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/SupportUtils/AviSynth_206.exe)? Maybe that will help.
SubConscious-

You're right. I'm sorry that I forgot.
I don’t like the irony that I can understand through your posts about my number of encodes.
You're wrong. I'm sorry that you thought that. I wasn't trying to be snide, sarcastic, or ironic. I was only giving you credit for knowing what you were doing. Maybe try a different codec, and see if you can duplicate the error in XviD, for example.
