If you open an AVI in VirtualDub, you can choose File - File Information. In the Audio Decompression section, it often lists something like :

Unknown codec (tag2000)

I have seen a variety of these tab types (for instance tag0055, or Tag 0161).

Is there a list somewhere where I can find the type of audio each one of these tags refers to? If not, can we start one here?

Tag2000 - AC3
Tag0161 - Divx3 audio codec included in 3.11a Alpha codec
Tag0055 - ????????

Thanks,
Rooster

Thanks! But can you explain to me how some of the audio formats get tagged?

For instance, Tag2000 is AC3, yet in the RFC, AC3 is listed as Tag92. It is the only listing for AC3 in the RFC :

A.79 Dolby AC3 SPDIF

WAVE form Registration Number (hex): 0x0092
Codec ID in the IANA Namespace: audio/vnd.wave;codec=92
WAVE form wFormatTag ID: WAVE_FORMAT_DOLBY_AC3_SPDIF

Furthermore, tag2000 is in the list, but is listed as DVM. What in the world is DVM? :

A.104 DVM

WAVE form Registration Number (hex): 0x2000
Codec ID in the IANA Namespace: audio/vnd.wave;codec=2000
WAVE form wFormatTag ID: WAVE_FORMAT_DVM

I've got an AVI file, video is encoided with divx and is working fine. I've checked the file information in Nandub and it shows the audio codec as being unknown. And of course audio doesn't work when I play the file. Any ideas on figuring out what codec I need? Only other clue I got from Nandub was:

Compression: Unknown (tag 0161)

Well, figured it out right after I posted. Seems it was using WMA, and #17 in the FAQ was the problem. I wish I would have known about this a long time ago, I've deleted quite a few files that I've downloaded because I thought the audio was missing.
